Is He/She a Canon?: Yes
Nationality: Southern Water Tribe
Location: Katara is traveling with her older brother and Aang
Alliance: The Avatar
Is He/She a Bender?: Yes, a novice water bender at present.
Character's Name:Katara
Gender:Female
Age:14
Height:5'3"
Appearance: This water bender from the Southern Tribes has a slender athletic build with a dark tan complexion. I believe Katara's most striking feature are her bright azure eyes that are framed by thick long lashes upon a heartshaped face. She has naturally wavy hair that hangs like rich dark chocolate to her waist. Most of the time she wears her hair in a thick braid down her back with two loops of hair on either side of her face.
For the majority of the fist two books, Katara was dressed in Southern Water Tribe clothing with the traditional blue parka that has fur around the hood. Her normal attire for the warmer climates is a short sleeve v necked dress trimmed in white with slits up each side. Beneath the dress, she has on a pair of darker blue tights and around her waist a white obi.
Nearly all of Katara’s movements are made with a seemingly effortless grace for which water benders are well known.
History: Katara was raised like many of the women in the water tribes learning to cook and tend to the needs of the whole group so that the tribe as a whole might flourish. While her brother was taught to hunt and fight, she was following her mother's example by helping with the meals, sewing, doing simple daily chores and caring for the younger children. Her life seemed nearly perfect as is often how it appears to young children who are happily enjoying the simple pleasures of being dearly loved by their parents.
Unfortunately, at the age of eight, Katara’s mother was killed during a Fire Nation raid and from that moment on her world changed dramatically. Hatred and anger were set aflame within the young girl’s spirit. When she was twelve, Hokoda, her father went to fight against the Fire Nation leaving the young girl and Sokka to be cared for by their gran-gran Kana. This only fed her growing hatred toward the Fire Lord and his people.
Two years later, while on a spear fishing expedition, Katara and Sokka discover Aang along with Appa frozen within a huge iceberg. The siblings quickly released them from their icy chamber to learn that the young boy is in actuality ..the lost Avatar.
Now the three venture forth across the four nations seeking a way for Aang to save their world…
Inventory: Katara’s greatest treasure is the choker she wears about her neck which was an engagement necklace that once belonged to her mother. She usually has a pouch of water tied to her waist just in case she might need to bend and the liquid is not readily available.
Personality:Katara is a kind hearted, dependable and motherly person who tries to care for those closest to her and any needy person she might meet along their journey. She is devoutly determined to help Aang fulfill his destiny for in doing so she hopes to end the Fire Nation’s rule and finally be reunited with her father. Hovering on the edge is that small part of her that also wishes to make them pay for what they did to her Mother.
She reflects many of the traits found in any average normal teenage girl filled with hopes and dreams. The awakening of feelings for the young men she meets along her travels not to mention the conflicting emotions Aang often brings about. Katara is unsure of herself especially within the roles and customs that young women often learn as they move into womanhood . This sometimes makes her feel uncomfortable and shy.
Strengths: I see her greatest strength as her determination to help make the greatest of her dreams come true; Aang defeating the Fire Lord. She has a natural wisdom about her which she has used to aide in balancing other's perspectives while keeping them focused on their main goal. Katara continually gives encouragement to the others and acts as peacemaker when necessary.
This young teen is very focused on learning to improve her skills as a water bender for which she has fought long and hard amongst prejudiced tribal laws to do. Besides using her bending to heal by realigning an injured person’s chi, Katara’s fighting skills grow impressively stronger with continued practice.
Sometimes we see a humorous side to the young water bender but it most often occurs when she is teasing her brother.
Weaknesses: Katara’s mothering and over protectiveness can be annoying to say the least. Her little pep talks and words of wisdom sometimes come off as being a know it all or bossy. She can be fiercely competitive and hard headed. Sometimes she jumps into situations while following the convictions of her heart without thinking things through completely.
Sample Roleplay: (NOT REQUIRED FOR SECOND CHARACTERS)
Huffing her way up to the top edge of the ragged stone monolithic temple, Katara stared at the valley below. She’d never seen anything like it…so hot and dry…but worst of all.... barren. Her large azure eyes scanned about the once simple sanctuary taking in the overgrown vegetation sprouting from cracks within the fallen stones that now rested haphazardly against a previously sturdy wall.
The brunette lifted her right hand to her forehead to block the sun’s glare and began searching for the boys. “I wonder where they’ve gone off to now?” she muttered while stepping carefully about what looked to have been a corral of some sort.
“Sooookkkkaaa!!“ Katara called out and then waited patiently for a reply. When none came, she grew concerned and hopped out closer to the edge to scream a bit louder.
“AANG!! SAKKA!” This time her fear filled voice echoed about the cavern walls
Then, like a small wave echoing back, she heard the two laughing somewhere off to her right. Turning the corner, she saw the two boys playing some game with a small round ball. Rolling her eyes and placing her arms across her chest, “WHAT are you two doing?”
Sokka turned toward his sister with a wide goofy smile on his face. “Hey Katara! Aang was just showing me a game he used to play here at the temple.”
Aang‘s cheeks rose upward and he nodded. “It’s a lot of fun…Would you like to play too, Katara?”
The near panic slipped away as she saw the joy in Aang’s eyes. With a small smile, she shook her head, “No..I think this might be even more fun to watch.”
Slipping slowly to the ground, she looked from Aang to Sokka and back again. “So…who’s winning?”
