Is He/She a Canon?: No
Nationality: Fire Nation
Location: Wandering the Earth Kingdom
Alliance: Anyone who fights against the Fire nation
Is He/She a Bender?: Firebender
Character's Name: Shu Zhan (prefers to be called Zhan)
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Height: 6 foot
Appearance: Shu stands just at 6 foot tall, with a lean muscular build. He has medium length dark brown hair which he allows to hang loose just above his shoulders. His eyes are, oddly enough, gray rather than golden. His skin is a light tan due to his extensive training outside in the sun. His left shoulder is scarred from a rather nasty battle incident.
He has tattooed calligraphy that descends down his spine that states one of many of his philosophies "Fire; The Art of the Sun, where there is destruction there is life". On the right side of his upper back he has a very intricate, swirling tattoo of fire which continues onto his shoulder and upper arm but straightens out into more directed flames, this connects to a dragon tattoo that rolls around his forearm, the head of the dragon being on the top of his hand.
Shu wears black pants which are tucked into his crimson and red Fire Nation military boots. Around his waist a black sash is wrapped, this holds up the large, decorated pieces of clothing that hang from his waist, dangling also from the sash is a beaded necklace that resembles that of the Air Monks but instead it has a flaming pattern on the totem. He wears a red, sleeveless gi top with a black lapel, this disappears under the decorated clothing around his waist. On his left shoulder he has a gold, finely crafted dragon head as shoulder armor, from under this descends extra armor, thin, steel plates of black and red armor that extends halfway down his upper arm. On his left forearm is a leather gauntlet with steel plates strapped to the top side.
History: Unknown to everyone, Shu was actually born amongst the Sun Warriors in their ancient civilization. His father was a retired Fire Nation Colonel who was tired of the war and had lost belief in it and his mother was a Sun Warrior, both parents being firebenders.
From an early age he was taught to firebend the Sun Warrior way, through this he learned many techniques and became a very spiritual firebender. As he grew up among the ancient community he was told stories of the great masters Ran and Shao, myths of firebending, feeding his love for the Sun and Fire but it would be many years before he even actually knew what was beyond his home.
He learned only to Firebend up until he was 12 years of age. At this time his father began to teach him martial arts that didn't require firebending but could be used with it. He learned techniques and concepts from Gumdo (Sword martial art), Aikido and Jujitsu, he used this in conjunction with his Dragon style and Sun style martial arts making him a very skilled Sun Warrior by the time he turned 16 and was the only Sun Warrior to utilize a weapon into his firebending. His father had given him his katana for Shu to learn.
Upon turning 16 however he wished to travel beyond his home, to see what was beyond the horizon. It was then that he learned that his father had came from beyond the horizon. This intrigued him further and upon receiving his families blessings he ventured alone away from his home.
After months of travelling over mountains and seas he reached the mainland of the Fire Nation, at the time he was a shirtless and poor looking young man. He was gazed at as he strolled through the futuristic looking villages, he was bewildered by the machinery he had never heard of and the citizens simply stared at the muscular and primitive looking Shu.
He wandered through many villages for a month until the local army spotted him, being the egotistical people they are they decided to give Shu a hard time. Although Shu was unfamiliar with what the soldiers were doing and just talked to them as if they were old friends, this lead to one soldier lunging at him with a fist of flames, Shu simply shifted his body on an angle allowing the man to pass and fall onto his stomach. A brawl broke out, all the combatants exchanging strikes with blocks.
The fight was soon broken up by the captain who had noticed Shu's sword, he recognized it as Colonel Shu Tai's katana, Shu explained to him that it belonged to his father which he soon summed up to be the Colonel being spoken of. The captain assumed that this boy should have the skills of his father and convinced him to join the army but had him recruited to an encampment in Fire Fountain City.
Over the next 3 years he trained and fought alongside other recruits, learning about Fire Nation history, political issues, literature, knife fighting and strategic studies. Upon turning 19 he was referred to the General's as a very skilled soldier and upon watching over a battle on an island in the Earth Kingdom they agreed. This earned Shu the promotion to Royal Guard of the Fire Nation Royal Palace, although he had to undergo an extra year of training so he could prove he could defend the, apparently, most important people in the Fire Nation. What he was taught was very familiar to what he was taught by his father, coincidentally enough.
2 months after turning 20 he became a Royal Guard of the Fire Nation Palace. Although upon his 21st birthday, due to outstanding performance, he was promoted to captain of the Royal Guard. This role meant he could coordinate everyone in the Royal Guard, but he had to share this position.
Although Shu had only served in the Guard whilst Ozai was in power he did not like how he ran the Nation. He found Ozai to be a cruel man and questioned how people who originated from the Sun Warriors could have become like this. It wasn't until 4 months after Ozai had burned and banished his own son that Shu had decided to leave the Fire Nation, his conclusion being that one who treats his own son like dirt has no right to rule a nation and so he did not wish to serve him. He left the Fire Nation as quick as the wanted posters came up, marking him as a traitor.
He was found very soon and attacked by a small battalion of fire benders, 10 attacking him at once, Shu struggled through the battle but was slowly picking each soldier off one by one. One soldier had blasted a rather powerful stream of flames at Shu, knocking him in his left shoulder. Shu managed not to get burnt using firebending but the attack had ripped off the left side of his armor, scratching and cutting up his shoulder as it was wrenched off his body by the blast. He escaped but barely, defeating all soldiers he ran away from there, holding his left shoulder.
For the next 3 years Shu wandered the Earth Kingdom and the Air temples to further his knowledge of the arts and helping those in need. What he does now is not history but the future.
Inventory: An Okatana (slightly longer than a normal Katana), a scroll of his version of the Art of War and a pair of daggers.
Personality: Shu is generally a pleasant person to be around, a gentlemen when he wants to be. He remains calm in the most violent situations, only losing his cool if overwhelmed by far too many people.
Shu doesn't really mind what people think of him, because he always has a comment ready for anyone who expresses any negative opinion of him or anyone else. He is doesn't see himself as pessimistic or optimistic but a realist.
Many people describe him as arrogant (which he kind of is) but Shu likes to say he is just very confident, when training he will train as hard as he can, when sparring he will strike as close to the opponent as possible without hitting them.
One thing that really gets on his nerves is when people mark him as a showoff, he just loves to use the techniques he learned in the harsh years of his life as a soldier, the same techniques he shows off are the same that saved him from the attack that injured his shoulder, his prime answer to anyone that calls him a showoff is "Whats the point in having amazing abilities if you do not use them?" Funnily enough that comment makes him seem very arrogant.
Shu tends to only actually reveal information of himself to others after he finds that he can trust the person in front of him. Some people take longer to trust than others so he is very decisive in his judgements, only making a decision of someone's personality after a minute or two which in some cases is his social downfall.
Strengths: An excellent firebender and an even better swordsman, Shu is very learned in the ways of war taking teachings from two very different sources but also enjoys the arts and tea giving him a calm persona. He is quite good at meditating, slipping into sub-conscious states very easily.
Weaknesses: Shu's left shoulder is very sensitive when there is no armor to protect it slip through the armor or remove it and there is his weak point. He can defend himself very easily but if he sees someone in need he usual will help them, his problem is he cannot defend himself and another person at the same time all that well.
Sample Roleplay: Shu sat on the ancient grounds of the Sun Warriors city, the sun bathing its energy upon him. He sat with one hand resting in the other, palm facing up.
As he breathed in... and out... a small spark in his palm grew into a flame and shrunk into a spark, grew into a flame and shrunk into small flame, the flame expanded and contracted, the flame growing bigger all the while.
Shu slowly slid into his sub-conscious, the world around him becoming vague and distant. He focused his mind on the sun, dragons, fire, everything that is the essence of what was flickering in his hands.
The flame that danced with his breathing split in three and two began orbiting around a single flame which remained in his palm, expanding and contracting as he breathed.
His mind now lay on the fields of a completely different place to where he actually sat, a huge grassy field, the wind lightly breathing a breeze to comb through his hair and the grass. A large river echoed in the distance, as it thundered down from the mountains far off on the horizon. The sun was setting, emanating soft, warm colors as it sunk down to the earth.
But in a crack the sun shattered and Shu fell into the black, the fields shrinking into darkness, a loud, annoying sound breaking through the walls of his mind and piercing into his ears. "SHU!"
His eyes widened and his body jumped, "Shu! Buddy! What are you doing!"
Shu looked up at his friend Rao, shaking his head Shu simply smiled and looked down at the ground,"I was meditating until a sound as annoying as pentapi rung through my head."
"You and your metaphorical talk, you could've just said it was me."
"Yeah but it's fun to toy with your mind, especially when nearly shatter mine,"he said with a chuckle and rubbing his head,"Do not worry old friend, I will get you back."
"No you won't,"Rao replied with an evil grin glued to his face.
"True,"Shu said, he clicked his fingers a small flame sparked around Rao's feet,"Care to dance?"
At this large sparks continuously cracked around his feet and Rao did the best he could to avoid the sparks, laughing all the while...
