Is He/She a Canon?: Nope
Nationality: Fire Nation
Location: Ember Island
Alliance: Fire Nation
Is He/She a Bender?: Nope
Character's Name: Akane Xiuying
Gender: female
Age: nineteen
Height: 5 feet eight inches
Appearance:
Deep burnt umber eyes that almost to appear to be entirely black are set behind almond shaped lids in Akane's sharp angled face. Her nose is small and narrow, being nearly invisible on her pale face if it were not for the soft shadows that hide between its harsh angles. Full lips bloom at the end of her delicate nose, their natural rose color usually painted over with cinnamon red gloss. Highly manicured obsidian eyebrows arch over her glossy white lids, which hold an abundance of dark feathery eyelashes. Charcoal traces the lines under and above her almond eyes aiding the lip paint in exaggerating her already striking features. Despite Akane's tendency to overplay her natural beauty she is never gaudy in her experiments with cosmetics. The overall effect is a very fierce sort of beauty, but not a fake one. Long raven hair cascades down her back and is cropped off a little below her waistline. The rest of Akane's body shares the same pallor as her face, giving her figure an almost evanescent quality. Willowy limbs and slender hands give her an almost elfin physique while also adding further dimension to her feminine curves.
Akane can always be found the most luxurious of clothes. From finely embroidered silks to the most richly died wools the materials she adorns herself with must be as beautiful as she is. Her preferences in color range from flaming reds, oranges, and golds, because patriotism is so in fashion. Akane tries to limit herself when it comes to layering to about three layers, anything more would be unbearable in the tropical climate of the Fire Nation Islands. She is also a huge fan of head pieces. Since she prefers to keep her hair down or tied into a braid (leaving the more creative and fussy hair styles for special occasions to avoid being accused of consistency) adding an orchid or cherry blossom or two to her du is a simple way of making her hair appear more elegant.
History:
Akane was born on Ember Island, but not in the glamorous vacation paradise it is known for. Instead Akane lived her life on the urban half of the island with only her mother Mingzhu, an aspiring actress who worked for a local theater. Her mother was infamously known for promiscuous behavior, or as her roommates liked to call it "her private auditions" with the male producers of the plays. It was not long before her career was at near standstill after the accidental birth of Akane. Already dishonored from her family for taking up such a "useless" profession in their minds, Mingzhu recieved no support or financial aid from any of them after Akane was born. Instead she raised her daughter in a small apartment house owned by the theater company she worked for, The Dancing Dragon Theater Troupe. There in the house of twenty or more women Akane got her first taste of the unglamorous life of the undiscovered in the entertainment capital of the world.
Life in the theater apartments was filled with constant fights, grudges, competition, and back stabbing. Despite being surrounded by women Akane never experienced any kind of motherly love from any of them. Even her own mother had never truly forgiven her for interrupting her career and ruining her reputation. Logically she should have never expected more from the self serving actresses she shared her home with, but as a young child Akane did not understand why they chose to ignore her, even to the point of accepting it as normal behavior.
Her early years were spent uncared for and friendless. She was passed on from women to women, hardly any of them wishing to have anything to do with her. Sure in the beginning she was an adorable little accessory, but soon enough she began crying, feeding, pooping and vomiting, too much of a mess for any of the women to enjoy. Even though they could not be bothered with her she was beyond fascinated with them. She could not help but idolize them. They were all so beautiful, with the finest clothes and makeup. Every night they adorned themselves with silks, flowers, jewels, and perfumes. Everyone wanted to be them, know them, and be with them. They were adored by all. And when they were on the stage, they become goddesses, of passion, fury, malice, heroism, elegance, sorrow, and joy. With the spotlight on them the entire world seemed to look up to their beauty, grace, and poise. Dazzling stars, gazed at with awe from the audiences below. And she so badly wanted to be just like them.
At age eight Akane finally was no longer the only young girl at the Theater apartments. Another women had joined their troupe, a young dancer by the name of Qinling with a daughter just a few months younger than Akane. Her name was Shuang and had inherited the same small and lean dancer body like her mother, with an unfitting big attitude. Despite their energetic personalities which would have most likely had them butting heads, Shuang and Akane immediately hit it off becoming best friends. Qingling and Shuang shared a completely different mother daughter relationship than Akane was used to. Qingling worked endlessly to provide for her daughter, and never blamed Shuang for her life style. The two had a strong bond, more then best friends, something Akane had never experienced. What was weirder was that as Shuang and Akane grew older and closer Qingling offered that same friendship to Akane, becoming the mother she never had.
The two inseparable friends became common faces at the The Dancing Dragon Theater House. They could always be seen standing outside before shows preforming scenes from the featured play that evening, or hilarious immitations of nobles and Fire Nation war commanders for the waiting customers. They continued their antics after the curtain call, mingling with the audience, entertaining them with either acting or behind the scenes stories on the cast. Shuang and Akane soon became very popular with the Theater's audience who considered them almost a side show, making the two teens mini-celebrities.
Once the owner of the The Dancing Dragon Theater Troupe heard of the two fifteen-year-old girl's rising popularity he immediately went to their mothers and suggested that they attend a theater school run by a local acting coach, so that in the future Akane and Shuang may be able to join the Theater Troupe. The tuition was thirty gold pieces a year, along with a forty percent cut from the money earned from the students first two performances. Akane's mother flat out refused, believing the money needed for Akane's acting lessons would be better spent promoting the career of an actress that already had the skills needed for the job, herself. When Akane's dreams appeared to be crushed by her own envious mother, some one else made the sacrifice to pay for her lessons, Qingling.
As Shuang and Akane attended the small theater school and refined their talents, they were both given small roles in the plays put on by the Dancing Dragon Theater Troupe. As Akane's presence grew stronger on the stage so did the tension between her and Mingzhu, to the point that she moved into Qingling and Shuang's apartment instead of sharing one with her mother.
Two years past and Akane graduated from the theater school. With the heavy need to pay her debts to her teachers she immediately set out in search of a job. The role had to be huge, not just a nameless extra, or even a line-less named character. She wanted some spot light, because it was not only money she was worried about, it was catching the eye of a few choice critics too. She would audition for as many as two shows a week, withdrawing if the part she received was too small or if the play or theater was too unknown. Akane landed her first huge role, in a play held by the Dancing Dragon Theater Troupe, as the best friend of two star crossed Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation lovers, set in Ba Sing Se during General Iroh's six hundred day siege.
Despite not having the lead role, the play got her the attention and money she desperately needed, as well as some attention she did not need. Nasty rumors were flying around about Akane, lies fabricated only to destroy her reputation, and career. The whispered words angered her to no end. She was never the promiscuous seducer, hardly the sabotaging cheater, and not at all the reckless drinker they made her to be. But what enraged her even more, was the result of her obsession for finding the source. Because it was from the one person who should be no more than proud of her success, her mother. And it was during a dress rehearsal for "Burning Hearts on Burning Earth" that Akane confronted Mingzhu. The show was a memorable one. From the screaming to the scratching, kicking, punching, and hair pulling, every ounce of hate held in by both of them for the last 17 years was released on maximum power. They were an unstoppable force. Plowing through curtains, sets, props and people, the mother and daughter fought until security was sent in to tear them apart. That day the owner of The Dancing Dragon Theater Troupe evicted Mingzhu from the Theater apartments and the Troupe altogether.
And life went on as it always did, with Shuang as her sister and Qingling as her mother. Akane tried out for several plays earning her first lead role after a year of auditions. The young starlet became not only popular on the theater scene, but a household name in nearly every island in the Fire Nation. She had nearly achieved her dreams. The talent, the beauty, and the fame. She was a constant guest at parties as well as friend to many Noblemen and women. Akane was soon introduced to a man claiming to be her mother's brother. With many political and show business connections Akane allowed him to take charge of here career, with the promise that he would make her just as rich and famous as the Fire Nation Princess herself. His first move as her agent was gaining her a role in the well publicized action filled play, "The Boy in the Iceberg" as its leading lady Katara, along with the critically acclaimed Ember Island Players. Despite her distaste for such a cheesy comedic part she was convinced that her newest role was literally fame being handed to her on a silver platter. Now having to let go of all of her fears Akane awaits the day where she must make a total fool of herself on stage in one of the most bizarre and accidentally funny plays she has ever starred in.
Inventory:
After their first place Akane and her best friend Shuang both bought each other jade necklaces with the money they earned. Akane's is a yellow jade carving of a dragon, slithering like a snake, with intricate claws, scales, and wings. It is hung around her neck usually under her clothes by a thick crimson cord.
Fans and purses, can a girl ever have enough. Akane can always be seen with both, but they are hardly ever the same one used the day before unless it happens to coordinate perfectly with her outfit.
Personality:
Ambition is a must have attitude if you want to make any kind of name for yourself in The Theater. And luckily for Akane she's made out of the stuff, but ambition on such a high dosage can make for a pretty ugly personality.
There are no earthly limitations to how far Akane would go to get what she wants. All her life she lived with people who had no problem with stepping over her to achieve their dreams, which is why she now has no problem stepping on everyone else to achieve hers. Her wants and needs come before everything in her mind and since she believes no one takes care of her, she does not have to take care of anyone but her self. Akane is also highly competitive in everything she does. A trait that has made her many enemies out of the other female actors who compete with her for the lead role at every audition. Her competitive nature also makes her very prone to jealousy. No matter the reason, looks, character or talent Akane can pull jealousy from any person she views as a threat to her or her career. And unfortunately fort those "threats" they are invited to a private performance of her wrath. Besides fame the discovery of her beauty and talent also gave Akane a lot of arrogance. She believes she is better than everyone else despite her poor background, and is very selective about the people she associates with. Aside from the darker half of her ambition Akane constantly strives to improve her acting skills through constant drilling, classes, and performances. She always keeps herself busy to ensure that she doesn't grow lazy with her acting because her entire livelihood depends on her performances and fame. If she cannot succeed at acting there are very few respectable jobs for young and pretty women like herself.
Akane is also a natural social butterfly. Acting is not the only way she promotes her career, a lot more relies on how popular she is with her audiences and how well she connects with them off the stage. For that reason she is a very practiced conversationalist, knowing what the right things to say to the right people. She could strike up a conversation with almost anyone and entertain that person for hours, with her witty comebacks, hilarious narritives, and bubly giggles. Just how she was taught to. Flirting is also natural talent of hers, all a part of being glamorous really, and getting what she wants. But despite her gift of gab she prefers not to get into in depth conversations because speaking her opinion in such a personal way leaves her open to a lot of criticism. Aside from being an entertaining speaker Akane is also very outgoing. Akane just knows how to have a good time and party it up. She loves traveling in crowds of people, even more when she is the center of attention. Her addiction to fame has her constantly thirsting for the spotlight a thirst she quenches by spending nearly all of her time out in the public either surrounded by crazed fans or other A-list celebrities and nobility.
She believes that acting was something she was born to do. From the time she was little she was surrounded by actresses and became completely romanced with the art. After years of fine tuning her already amazing natural talents Akane has matured into a very credible actress. She can contort her face into almost any expression bringing bursting in rage or tears in a matter of seconds. Her expressions read like a book, her face and body language speaking louder than any of the lines she recites. As mediocre of a profession as acting may be considered it is still something she was trained for, as thorough as even the most skilled sword master. For Akane it's not only remembering lines and spitting them back out again on stage, it is getting so engulfed into a character that you can speak their words and think their thoughts even if they are not in the script. That's the only way you can ever get the audience to truly enjoy a show, by getting them so attached to the story and characters that they care for or hate them as if they were people if their own lives. But, while she has a gift for expression she rarely expresses her own emotions. Her skill as an actress range from not only results in convincing performances on stage, making her a very convincing liar even when lying to herself.
Strengths:
In any situation Akane can convincingly pull off any personality or character. Her skills as an actress not only give her fame in theater but also aid her with fighting her way up to a higher social status.
Her lively personality makes her a lot of fun to be around and always wins her an invitations to parties.
Akane is very ambitious and can achieve nearly anything she wants if she puts he mind to it.
Weaknesses:
Akane is a very jealous person who easily makes enemies out of any person who she views as a threat. She can sometimes be so obsessed in her envy that she plots ways to completely ruin her especially intimidating competitors.
Being conceited is another small vice. Her beauty and fame can't help but make her feel like she is on top of the world, way way way above the mere mortals below.
Besides being a highly entertaining person and loads of fun to hang out with Akane does not have much of a personality. She often lets her critics dictate who she is and what she says because she is constantly worried about her image. Only a few people know who she truly is, and can honestly call her a friend.
Vanity is another less than favorable attribute of Akane's. She takes hours every morning preparing to show her face to the world, refusing to leave her room if she looks a little less than perfect. She has no problem with suffering for beauty...really really suffering.
