Character's Name: Shona
Gender: Male
Age: 44
Height: 6'2
Appearance: Shona is a large man, weighing about two hundred and seven pounds. He about six feet, two inches, with broad shoulders and a thick neck that supports and firm and fair face; that might seem attractive of man of middle age. Shona has rich brown skin color and several scars from his years of fishing. Shona also has strong arms with large hands and feet, supple calves and thighs from years of swimming as well.
Shona’s head is large and oval shaped with a strong jaw, his soft, dark umber hair falls past his shoulders, and one lock is wrapped in linen. He has wide, lucid ocean blue eyes, long lashes and dark eyebrows. His nose is crooked from getting into a wrestling match with his older brother Ikiaq. His long lips are often curled into a cheerful smile, he has goatee and moustache. Around his neck is ivory collar with a fishing hook and a white feather fastened in the middle. His chest is very broad with scatterings of dark chest hair; on his left bicep is a tattoo of a tribal looking owl, made from woad dye and used with a needle and sharpen fishing hook. Shona’s brother Kesuk gave it to him during a long fishing trip. His mother wasn’t happy with the new look.
Shona’s wears various outfits. His most common is his cobalt tunic with white rabbit fur borders on the hem and sleeves. Around his waist is a three foot beige sash. He has dark blue leather trousers and thick gray boots with beige fur lining. He also grey leather gloves for fishing and to wear causally, his parka is of pale periwinkle, with a grey fox fur lined hood and hem. He has pattern of an owl’s head on the back of his parka made from white thread.
His second outfit is for fishing. Because swimming was needed occasionally the waters were cold. Under their parkas was sealskin wetsuit. The wetsuit provided them warmth while on deck and suppleness while swimming to get a damaged net or to cut something loose. It’s of a dark brown color and fits tightly around his body and cuts off at the calves and mid forearm. Shona wears waterproof and insulated boots as well. The sealant was the seal’s oil and blubber. Shona also wears his hair up in bun to prevent from getting it tangled.
History: Shona was born on the first of April to Qilaq and Manja. He was very loud baby since birth. The midwife commented to his mother Qilaq (Kee-lack), that the child is loud enough to be used as a warning siren during the blizzard months. Arrluk, Chulyin and Ikiaq where his older brothers, they weren’t surprised at the news of another little brother, Chulyin even suggested to his father Manja that they should ask for a trade for baby sister instead.
Shona learned how to walk early. And with Ikiaq's help, he got into more mischief then any of his older brothers. He started talking late, but once he did, is family couldn’t get him to shut up. By the time little Shona reached his third birthday, Qilaq went into labor with her fifth son, Kesuk on April the tenth. When he was six, Atka was born during a summer storm. Soon Qilaq had six wonderful little boys. And she had an enough. After sixth child she went into menopause and never bore Manja anymore.
Kesuk and Arrluk where the only water benders in the family and were sent to train with Master Pakku whilst Shona, and the others learned to become fighters and fisherman. Arrluk was very determined and advanced in the ranks quickly as warrior waterbender as well as Kesuk though he didn't care too much about battle. But Shona was too hyper and unpatient as a normal soldier, he quit to help his father with his fishing boats. Shona can still hold his own in battle, but does not wish nor want to be "blood-thirsty soldier"
As the years progress, Shona living in big family of five brothers was hectic. Someone was always either in a fight, in trouble or having girl problems. His father used his sons to help with the fishing, all six sons are fishermen. Arrluk on the other hand acts as a reserved warrior for Arnook during times of battle. Since he was only water master the family.
Qilaq was spiritualist, and heavy believer in totems and totemic power. She gave each of her sons a totem animal to protect them and guide them. Shona’s was the snowy owl. Because of this he has an owl tattoo and feather with his collar. It was gift from his mother when he completed his ice dodging and gained the mark of the wise.
However things when downhill when Shona reached adolescence, with Arrluk and Chulyin already married. Shona lost his two closest friends and was spent most of his time with Ikiaq, flipping skirts or in Shona’s case, pulling down pants as he was bisexual. He and Ikiaq were often in taverns and bars doing all sorts of trouble after work and training. Manja had enough with Shona’s promiscuity he talked to his friend Kipa about an arranged marriage with his daughter Nezumi who refused any suitor that came near her. So when Shona was twenty he Manja married his forth son to Nezumi. It wasn’t a bad arrangement. Shona and Nezumi where actually childhood friends. They got along very well during the first months of courting and then marriage. At that point Shona finally settled down. And Manja breathed a sigh of relief.
Nezumi wasn’t pregnant until Shona was twenty-seven. Very late for Water tribe woman to have her first child. Still it wasn’t uncommon. Shona was very loving and supportive through Nezumi’s difficult pregnancy. He was there though the bloating, breast swelling and cravings. One of the strangest was fried squid with roasted seal turtle on honey bread. Still Shona and Nezumi went through it all, not gracefully but they went through the months groaning and belching. At the start of the last month only week from her due date, Nezumi’s water broke. Shona was fishing only few miles away from shore, when his brother Kesuk told him Nezumi was in labor. Shona hurried home to find the midwife and Yugoda with Nezumi in the back room. Nezumi was in agony in birthing sling; her contractions where coming fast, and midwife new that birth will only be in few hours. Yugoda told Shona to wait outside. But, Shona wanted to comfort and support Nezumi. Yugoda told him that the birthing room was no place for a man, Shona’s response was. “If it wasn’t for me, Nez, wouldn’t be huffing and puffing, now as the father, I should have the right to be with my wife.” the midwife snorted told him to take off his parka and help his wife.
Shona stood behind Nezumi, and acted as a physical brace. Holding her as she started to push, Shona kept her steady as midwife delivered their first child. Kokomi, play on the word Koko, meaning Chocolate. But as the midwife was about to deliver the afterbirth she told Shona that a second child was coming, The shocked exspression and Shona's exclimation "SHE'S HAVING TWINS?!" was almost enough for the midwife to kick out Shona again, still the midwife told Nezumi to push again, Shona got back behind Nezumi and held her as she pushed again, drained from Kokomi’s birth, the second one was just as hard. Shona watched with amazement that the midwife delivered their second child. A little boy, as well as the afterbirth, however Yugoda’s face did not look too happy.
“Thank the spirits that Nezumi is a strong woman. Not many women her family can give birth to full sets of twins. One always dies. This one…however might join those odds. The little boy’s lungs were still underdeveloped he’s barely breathing Shona. Better start praying if you want your son.” Nezumi slept, recovering from giving birth. Shona stood over the boy’s cradle and prayed to all his ancestral spirits that his little boy will live. After a week of care from Yugoda and her attendants the boy gained weight and was breathing normally. Shona gave the boy the name, Kavik after the wolverine, for his tenacity and will to live. When he and Nezumi held the twins one morning with family surrounding them celebrating the birth of the surprise duo, Shona cried for the first time in many years that he was blessed, not with one child, but with twins.
As the children grew, Shona taught them everything he knew about fishing and ice skating. Kavik was adept in ice skating, and improve the ice skates so they would be more efficient. Kokomi took after her mother and became a healer, while Kavik used his waterbending talent to help him fish and ice skate. Shona watched with amusement and joy, the growth of his children.
