((Before anyone objects, I actually double-checked the episode: Roku intervenes and spares the main village from destruction, and only his house is destroyed. And since this site says the island was abandoned ever since the eruption...))
In what was undoubtedly one of the few strokes of brilliance by her little circle of advisors, it had been suggested that the Red Sabre clan investigate Roku's Island. Word-of-mouth said that it was still uninhabited to this day, and that no one had returned after the eruption.
Which meant there could still be valuables around worth stealing.
The first scouting party had returned almost a week ago and reported that their suspicions were correct. The entire island looked deserted, and while some of the houses were damaged or destroyed by the eruption, the vast majority of them were relatively undamaged and their contents right where they'd been when the inhabitants fled. And that was enough to get Seiko's greedy little heart pumping.
It hadn't taken them long to reach the island (well, not long after having to march halfway across the firenation in order to reach the sea), and much to Seiko's delight it seemed the rumors were true. The band had split up after that point, each going to find their share of the spoils. And finally, this was loot they could say with complete honesty wasn't stolen. The island had been abandoned so long, everything here essentially became the property of whoever wanted it.
While the rest of her merry band of miscreants ransacked the first houses they could find, Seiko took her time in selecting a target. Those of higher status in the village would no doubt live in the homse closer to the mountain, so that they could look down over the rest of the village. While most of the homes actually on the slope had been destroyed in the eruption, Roku's included, there were still one or two near the base of the mountain that were still intact.
The first two she found were largely burned-out husks, and since the buildings themselves were still standing, it meant the fire was caused by something inside rather than the eruption. On the third house however...well, what was inside was anything but classy on the surface. But when scavengering around the remnants of a volcanic eruption, one expects to find a little dust.
Seiko carefully made her way toward the bedroom, feeling along the walls as she went. Looking wasn't enough, as the walls were covered with ash, but eventually she found what she was looking for. A little dusting revealed the hinges to a small metal door, and after the lock took a little "finessing" (ie: she forced the door open with one of her larger daggers), Seiko stumbled across a most welcome glow...
...the metallic glow of Fire Nation currency in the light. While not enough to put her even remotely close to the nobility back on the mainland, she wasn't about to take a few hundred gold coins lightly. Or the few bits of precious jewelry. Or...actually, the deed to the home was pretty much useless to her. Sure she could probably fetch a profit selling the house, but that would mean compromising this, this gold mine for her crew! An entire village, untouched by human hands since the eruption, and now it all belonged to the Red Sabre clan. Not that they were looking to settle down just yet, but the remains of the village would provide a suitable base camp until all the looting and ransacking was complete. Then they'd make the decision whether to stick around or not...if not, the houses here would certainly fetch a fine price.
Just so long as they didn't mention how they came into possession of them. People could be so touchy when it came to plundering sacred sites like this...
