Is He/She a Canon?: No
Nationality: Earth Kingdom
Location: Earth Kingdom; Kyoshi Island
Alliance: The Earth Kingdom
Is He/She a Bender?: Water bender
Character's Name: Kora
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Height: 5’7
Appearance: Kora considers herself fairly average looking. She is about 5’7 and trim, thin with slightly toned muscles. Her skin is a lighter shade, evidence of Earth Kingdom heritage. Her eyes are a dark blue, expressing the water tribe side of her family, and her hair a sepia brown, falling neatly around her shoulders with some pieces tied up. Her clothes are of a more standard variety influenced by the Water nation; a blue and white trimmed dress falling about her knees with form fitting forest green pants. Her boots are tall and dark brown with fur to make them warm. Inside each boot she has two small daggers, for small chores more than anything else. Sometimes she’ll buy and trade different articles of clothing, depending on the season and what she needs. Kora always carries herself with a determined stride and takes care to keep her face impassive. She’s found that strangers may be more inclined to bother someone who looks weak or timid, so she never wants to seem that way. She also always has a small pack on her with a few supplies, as well as a small bag for her bending water.
History: Born and raised on a small farm on Kyoshi island, about a day’s ride to the nearest village, Kora’s life was spent rather secluded. Her father, a second generation Southern Water Tribe man, managed a small fish exporting business from their home and preferred to keep to himself. Kora has a few early memories of him tentatively showing off his account books, his pride and joy. His lack of attention was not simply directed at Kora of course, her mother and two older brothers shared the brunt of being left to their own devices. While her siblings had one another to play with and bother, Kora’s mother insisted on keeping her daughter within arm’s reach and always dragging her along during her chores. Kora felt suffocated with all the attention and longed to do anything to escape her mother’s smothering.
There were occasions when Kora was able to leave her home and wander about the village which was their neighbor, usually when her mother had her head turned. These excursions were few and far between, however, and did little besides whet Kora’s appetite to see more. Women dressed up in dresses and armor with colorful paint on their faces also drew the twelve year olds interest. Since she had discovered her ability to bend Kora had found little example to follow but these female warriors had techniques that were a legitimate style. It gave her something to base some forms off of, and in turn help her gain more control over her ability.
When Kora turned fifteen her brothers found jobs as fishermen on some boats but she was still kept in the confines of home. With two children gone her mother felt lonelier than ever and stayed in her bedroom, asking Kora to stay and sew with her or read to her. Kora’s father made himself scarce during this time, leaving the island to go with the shipments. He did think of his family at least a few times when he was away, for he brought Kora some things back like clothes and dolls. Being sixteen she felt little appreciation for these tokens but showed an appreciative face all the same.
Ships made trips to the island every month or so, bringing in certain supplies Kyoshi Island could not make or grow themselves. That was how her father went to and fro, and how Kora decided she wanted to as well. But no matter how much she wanted to distance herself from her nagging mother, Kora couldn’t take her plans all the way and leave the island for good. So she muddled through, practicing cooking with her mother and visiting with other women who stopped by their residence. Her brothers made a point of visiting less and less often as the seasons changed, and one day the eldest even came by with the young woman he planned on marrying. At eighteen Kora was sick of how everyone’s life progressed while her own stayed stale and monotonous. Her bending was the only thing she could really say she had accomplished, and even that was a stretch. She knew moves and her control was fine but none of it was actual water bending, it was all influenced by the warriors.
Being unable to completely leave her parents, Kora fell into a state like her mother. Little was required of her so she was free to laze around all day and sit up and read at night. Her family’s collection of scrolls was rather limited and often she would read and re-read the same stories and news reports. She was disappointed in herself for not making a bigger effort to do more with her life and angry at her mother for holding her back so easily. Practicing her bending was the only thing she really did anymore and even that was half-hearted. What Kora longed for most was a reason to get away from Kyoshi Island and re-motivate herself. The dreary scenery and presence of her mother has been wearing on her for too long.
Inventory: As she lives at home, Kora does not find much necessity in carrying various odds and ends. She owns a water skin though it’s grown dusty in her room. Usually one will find an article of clothing she’s sewing or a scroll in her hand.
Personality: Unavoidably bored. Kora has seen nothing but Kyoshi Island since she was born, and even that has been limited. Her frustration with this fact has been mounting without end the last few years and when annoyed about even trivial things has a tendency to snap at people. A frown seems to have become her natural expression and many people take this to mean she is simply spoiled as she does have everything a teenage girl should want. The only thing Kora does have that actually makes her happy is her imagination. When her hands are free she tends to doodle on any smooth surface and makes up all sorts of instances of when she might leave.
Strengths: Creativity is on her side, along with quick ideas and plans.
Weaknesses: Kora’s problem is being indecisive. She knows what she wants but is often too tentative to act on her wants and wishes.
Sample Roleplay: With a quick flick of her wrist Kora practically tossed the pan of fish on the table. She grabbed a bowl off the table and walked back into the kitchen the sthingy some steamed in it. Having seen enough of her mother for one day Kora resolved to take this evenings meal in her room. Padding barefoot up the short flight of stairs and turning a corner she rolled the screen that led to her room closed. Let her mother think she was still sleeping. It had been raining nonstop all day, and the small silver drops could still be heard outside the square window above her head. It was chilly out so Kora crossed her legs on the low bed and pulled a shawl over her shoulders before scooping the bowl up and slowly eating with her fingers. Chewing slowly the young woman sighed.
