-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is He/She a Canon?: nope
Nationality: Fire Nation, though she once considered herself Earth Kingdom
Location: tends to change- she travels often
Alliance: none at the moment
Is He/She a Bender?: Fire Bender
Character's Name: Souno
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Height: 5'6"
Appearance:
At first glance, she appears to be like any other Fire Nation woman- long, silky hair, naturally delicate features, amber eyes- but if you look closely, you’ll notice quite a few distinctions. For one, her eyes are warmer than most, though they harbor a similar pain as any other warrior. She is amazingly robust and will often sleep outside if she has no other means, financial means especially, to rest elsewhere. Her hair is usually tied in a single tail using a small green sash that she managed to keep from her stay in a village long ago. She proudly bears a lifelong tan which caused her once pale skin to be considerably darker. A rare smile softens her sharp look and has been known to light an entire room, as well as diffuse a potentially dangerous situation.
History:
Though it is obvious which nation she belongs to, she doesn’t know exactly where she came from. She knows she was found and taken in by a young, expecting Earth Kingdom couple when she was old enough to walk. She had heard stories from her adoptive parents about that night- it was dark in the forest when they found her on their way home, and though she was upset and weary, they could tell from her small tattered clothing and well worn shoes that she had come a long way. However, though distinguishing marks on her clothing were unrecognizable and the child herself seemed innocent enough, her small hairpiece made it clear who she was. But instead of leaving her to fend for herself once more, they took her in and cared for her as their own. She had often asked them more about that night, but eventually stopped, feigning satisfaction for the humble answer they had often given her.
Growing up, she and her younger brother, Bao, spent much of their time in the nearby village, causing mischief with a band of other children their ages. She remembers the games they would play, all of them dealing with daring heroes fighting the fire nation. Though she openly refused, she would oftentimes be a fire nation soldier or a defenseless girl in distress due to her pale, delicate features and inherited hot temper; regardless of how angry was over the decision, she gladly placed much energy and enthusiasm into her role playing, and was easily an irreplaceable member of their group. When they grew tired of their games, they would study the earth benders in their village and emulate their moves, hoping to be great earth benders themselves one day- which was the sole reason why Souno would come home every night with sore feet and sprained ankles, and why she considered herself weak compared to her brother. With time, Bao and a few others from the group reaped the benefits of their practicing with actual earth bending, while Souno still waited on her powers to develop. However, given all her “training”, she often wondered if her exercises would produce any earth bending.
Unfortunately, life became difficult for her when she discovered her bending abilities. She remembers seeing fire nation soldiers storm the small village when she was nine years old. She couldn’t find her parents but she saw the village earth benders overtaken one-by-one, despite their strong efforts to ward off the invaders. She ran in search of her family but found her brother and friends confronting two fire benders but oblivious to another soldier taking aim behind them. As the young benders shook the earth, a strong blast of fire flew behind them, distracting the soldiers. Thinking that they were outnumbered, the boys ran, as Souno stared at her hands, finally realizing who she was, and was horrified by the truth. Unbeknownst to her, Bao and the others made a sharp turn behind a nearby building but, after noticing that their friend was missing, looked behind them, only to see her cornered by their enemies. She was awakened from her daze by her brother’s voice followed by medium-sized rocks hitting the soldiers, crying for her to escape. Following her friends’ orders, she raced behind them, only to be stopped by three more soldiers when they turned the corner. The young benders, Souno included, took their stances, leaving Souno to hope that her friends would still be by her side once they saw what she could do. Instead, she was grabbed from behind by one of the very soldiers the boys had defeated. She was paralyzed after hearing him call to the others, “this girl is Fire Nation! Search the village and take with you any others these people might be holding captive!” She tried to free herself but watched in horror as her friends were surrounded by fire, collapsing from heat and lack of oxygen. She doesn’t remember much after that moment, but she knows the boys were still breathing when she was carried away. She is uncertain of whether either of them survived that moment, but she knows that part of her died since that day.
She was taken to the Fire Nation and adopted by one of the generals responsible for the village’s invasion. As she grew, she was enrolled into one of the best academies in the nation, where she was forced to learn the opposite of what she grew up knowing in the village: the other nations were primitive- they needed the proper guidance offered to them by the Fire Nation. She was taught the proper ways of fire bending by several masters, which produced exceptional results. However, as her training and education progressed, her fighting spirit steadily weakened, which caused her new adoptive parent to worry. Rather than allowing the fire inside of her to die, he granted her more lessons, this time with the sword. He would lead her into the forests near their home and train her in combat, dictating to her the art of war. As he trained her, he saw the fire burning in her once more, but it was of a different flame. That fateful day still haunted her, and as she trained, glimpses of her old friends would appear in the fire she bended, and she constantly watched them clutch their chests, holding on to dear life... The more those memories flashed, the more her fire grew, until it became uncontrollable. She was 16 when the general’s training ground was engulfed in her flames. When he finally smothered the fire using his own fire bending, she was nowhere to be found. She ran to their home, grabbed what the general had given her and made her escape, leaving no trace of her existence behind. Now, she travels the world in search of a true identity, eager to find the friends and family she was taken from but afraid to succumb to a vengeful heart.
Inventory:
she carries a double-edged sword, which she relies on often, and will use it to fire bend if the situation calls for it.
Personality:
If you see her smiling, it is often because of a childhood memory. She is usually very focused and often superb at completing her personal missions, no matter how difficult or dangerous they appear to be. She has a heart of gold and tries to help out whoever she can, but will often ask the ones she meets if they’d seen various people from her past- she had asked so many times before that the mere thought of questioning has become an unshakable habit for her. But in spite of her warm spirit, she is prone to rage and blind hatred when she fire bends, which is one reason why she doesn’t rely on her bending often. At times she feels she can’t help but to live in the past.
Strengths:
Though she denies this fact, the pain she holds onto from her childhood fuels the fire in her bending. The more she remembers, the stronger (bigger, hotter) her flames become
Weaknesses:
Because she keeps those painful memories close to her, it is easy for her to lose control of her own fire. Unfortunately, she is often too engulfed in these memories to regain control.
Sample Roleplay:
“Let’s go!! Don’t let her get away!!”
Souno ran down the dusty trail bordered by tight, earthen walls 8 feet tall. She looked up at the trees on the high ground, then straight ahead, pondering how she would escape her earth bending pursuers. Her path was cut short as a wall quickly appeared in front of her, complements of two more Earth Kingdom resistance fighters standing atop. She came to an abrupt stop and stepped back to the right wall as the guards closed in. As she took a closer look at the young men, she noticed that two of them looked familiar.
"Wait!” She shouted, "I lived in that village once! I only came back in search of answers.”
“Ha!” the leader of the group exclaimed, “I’m proud to say that no Fire Nation man or woman lived here, but you will come with us. I expect you’ll live a long life in your new cell."
They continued walking towards her. Finally, she closed her eyes and took a traditional earth bender’s stance. Before the men had a chance to finish laughing, she threw a punch forward, letting loose a powerful fireball towards the leader. The man dodged the blow, and stared at the woman. He scowled, realizing the fun and games were over. "If it’s a fight you want-” he started. With her eyes still closed, the woman continued, maintaining her stance. She moved her foot sharply across the ground, letting loose a stream of fire towards the ones at her left side. She heard the ones to her right rush towards her. She swung an open hand to them, unleashing another blast of fire. "That’s it,” the youngest of the men uttered. He kicked up a rock and pushed it in Souno’s direction. For this, she opened her eyes. In one movement, she swept below the rock and, while just reaching the young man, used her force on her right side to knock him down. Rather than allow a moment’s rest, she closed her eyes once more, directed her energy towards the ground and summoned a blast powerful enough to propel her into the air. As she landed on higher ground, she sprinted to the nearby woods and hid behind a tree, avoiding any flying rocks that came from behind. Before long, the fighters reached the higher ground as well, running straight ahead for the unwelcomed guest. As they ran past, she stole one final glance of the youngest and commanding men.
If I didn’t know any better… she began. However, her inquiry quickly gave way to anger and remorse. No, Bao and Sheng couldn’t have escaped the Fire Nation. They were far too young to fight back. Rather than return to the village, Souno allowed her bitterness to lead her further along the path. The sun must be playing tricks on me.
