Kyakou slowly shifted his weight back and forth slightly as he waited for the stranger to hopefully wake up. He was beginning to think that he had been knocked out until the eyes slowly fluttered open, revealing shining eyes. He watched as the stranger knelt near him and apologized for being asleep while he was awake. Well it wasn't much since he had just come out of his state of being unconscious. His eyes watched as the hand brushed away a large bang of his white hair to feel his forehead. The hand felt rather smooth...gentle...warm. It was comforting for the moment it was there and then as it ran down his face. He couldn't help but think it was like a...mother's touch in a way. Something he was sure another normal male wouldn't have.
The boy mentioned burning...was that why his back was still in so much pain? He hadn't even though of the idea of being hit by something on fire until now. Then it hit him, his eyes slightly widened for a moment before shrinking back to their normal size. That voice...that gruff voice was the last thing he remembered nearly. It must have been one of the guards...yes...it had to have been. Were they chasing another prisoner or getaway? Had he just been in the wrong place at the wrong time? Maybe...but he knew from day one he was stationed there that they had no like for him regardless. He supposed they could let an 'accident' slide.
His teeth gritted as he felt a surge of pain creep up his back. "Gah...." He muttered under his breath trying not to be too loud. A small tear dripped from his normally icy eyes which were quite soft now. It was painful...something he hadn't experienced for a long time...a very long time. The last pain he remembered was emotional pain which was probably at least ten times as worse. How could he have trusted that girl...she turned him in. He kept her secret yet was still betrayed in the end. Some people he just couldn't understand. He glanced back over to his sword and teal sash that lay crumpled on the ground next to him. Kyakou wanted to keep it closer to him...but somehow he felt comforted by the stranger. Trust...was something hard for him to hold again for nearly anyone.
"You..." He began looking at the boy again and noticed his hair. "You're...not from around here...are you?" He kept his eyes staring at the wooden floor as it creaked every so often from the shifting weight of the ship against the high seas. "Are you...Ahhh!" His eyes shut quickly as he felt the burning sensation once again race across his back. He reached with one hand to his shoulders much to his dismay and pain to remove his white haori first. He could just barely remove it without having too much pain. Next was his black kosode top. This fell down with a bit more ease. "I hope whatever you have...works on burns if thats what happened."

The scruffy looking bag made a soft swishing sound as Avy dragged it across the roughly hewn wood to her side and began working diligently to untie the hemp string which held it closed. Her dainty hands paused momentarily upon hearing the injured boy’s growl of pain and she turned to meet his gaze, quickly noting the tear rolling down his cheek as he put forth his query.
Perhaps it was that tear or the vulnerable position that he was in but somehow the image tugged at her conscious and the young woman gave a soft shake of her head. “No..I’m not from the mainland. Just a small isolated island south of here. One you probably never visited nor would ever have really cared to.” She replied with a half smile.
Turning back to her task, Avelen eventually worked the knot loose and reached within to pull out her mother’s dress. The young girl stared for a long time at the garment, her hands squeezing it tight. Giving a sad sigh, she took the largest portion of the fabric to her mouth and used her front teeth to tear a small whole into the bright blue cloth. The ’boy’ then poked her finger into the tiny opening and using both hands, tore it into long strips. ‘Forgive me Mum..’ she thought while stacking the new bandages one atop the next.
She stopped instantly when he cried out in pain and moved closer to help him remove the white overcoat and the black top beneath. Her cheeks turned a bright pink when her fingers brushed his bare shoulder as she gently pulled the under shirt to his waist. The auburn haired girl’s throat closed a bit at the embarrassing situation she found herself in and she gave a short cough to clear the tight passage.
"I hope whatever you have...works on burns if that’s what happened." he said through gritted teeth.
Her companionate eyes noted that the burnt skin that was already tightening. “Umm ..I laid my cape on the floor. Let me help you to lay on top of it and then I’ll go look for a few other things that I’ll be needing.”
Between the two of them, they shimmied his body over to the wrap. The cross dresser used subtle tugs and pushes in directing the young man to lie on his stomach. Avy then pulled off her fire nation jacket and pressed it beneath her new patient’s head. The chill of the ocean breeze blowing through the slated walls caused her to shiver as her body adjusted to the loss of the simple covering. The water bender rose swiflty to her feet and began searching through the barrels for that which she needed to heal his burns as well as quench their thirst; fresh water. Along her way, she not only found small kegs of the necessary liquid but some fruits, vegetables and salted meats.
She returned to her new companion with much brighter spirits due to the successful treasure hunt. Picking up the torn pieces of her mother’s dress, Avy knelt by his side and opened the water keg. The healer pressed her lips together and said softly as she turned his head in the opposite direction from where she would be working. “ Please..I..I need you to face this way while I treat the wound.” It definitely wouldn’t bode well if he found out that she was a water bender. To distract him, she placed a cool damp cloth on his wound before calling the liquid upward from the small oak barrel. “It is a burn..and it was fairly bad when I first brought you on board.” the water bender’s soft voice paused for a moment as she focused her chi on the worst of the charred flesh. She closed her eyes and felt the lightheadedness that came from imparting her chi into another. “I don’t understand why he fired at you…there was only the three of us and…” she swallowed hard as beads of sweat began to form on her brow. “..it was definitely you he was aiming at with his fire ball.”

Kyakou kept silent as he felt his hearth thump rapidly. This was mostly impart due to his wound probably, but also for some other reason. He wasn't nervous about the stranger since he was rather kind and caring for a boy. It almost seemed as if he wanted to place the face with another individual, although he couldn't quite draw the picture of what that individual might look like in his head. He felt the help from the stranger remove his top. It was a bit chilly while being exposed to the crisp sea air, however his back was aflame...almost literally. He listened to the stranger's soft voice...it was compassionate. He nodded lightly and moved carefully to lay down on the cloak. He gritted his teeth as he felt his burnt skin shift slightly which pained him, although he didn't yelp or complain this time.
The words were a bit comforting...even if they were coming from a boy. Laying there, he tried to think of where the boy had actually come from. The only islands south were not populated much due to their terrain and environment. Even the forest clearings didn't help since much of the terrain couldn't even be used for crops since the land was continual either drenched in rising swamp-like water or charred from a island volcano. Something wasn't right about the boy's story, but for now...he would take simple pokes at it until he got the truth.
He listened as the stranger left him to his own thoughts for the time being. It was rather quiet except for the rickety ship wood and the swish and swash of the water crashing against the ship's hull. Every so often he heard the drizzle of water sprinkle itself across the deck of the ship. It sounded like the waters were getting a tad rough, however from the sounds of it, there wasn't a storm at least. It only took the stranger a few minutes before his return. Next, his ears perked slightly as he heard the rip of fabric. He tried to look out of the corner of his eye to see what the boy was ripping up, however couldn't quite turn his head enough.
He heard the voice again from the stranger requesting to look towards the blank barrels that laid all around them. Well...he certainly didn't want to see his wound, however he was curious why he didn't want him to look. He closed his eyes, resigning himself to the boy's request and felt something warm...however it wasn't pain this time but soothing. He relaxed his tense musclkes as the feeling coursed over his back. It certainly wasn't a herbal remedy or else he would've felt a bit of a sting and the rubbing of the solution onto his burn. Something was definitely...mysterious. His thoughts were broken as he heard the stranger speak again. He contemplated the situation for a moment before thinking back to the guards. "Yeah...they never liked me...even after I was there for a while. It doesn't surprise me that thats what happened." He shrugged his shoulders without thinking. "Oww....." He muttered feeling a bit of a sharp pain spike up his back before being soothed again by the mysterious feeling. "So...what are you doing back there exactly?" He had his eyes closed still as he relaxed from the pain being relieved.

Serentity came over Avaleen as she connected to the water swirling above the boy’s bare back. She’d always had difficulty describing the sensations that reverberated between her and the fluid element to her mother. The brunette’s inner energy coursed down her arms to her hands to pass through the liquid intermediary and her aqua eyes glowed; the green and blue exchanging dominance. Her lips rose slowly in satisfaction as the darkened skin fell away to reveal a newly formed pink sheath.
Avy’s brows furrowed when the white haired boy told of his own tribesmen using their bending against him due to something as ridiculous as dislike. Her lips narrowed as memories from her past surged into consciousness. Hadn’t she suffered the same by the other children on Kushi? Perhaps his hair and eyes brought about fear or they were jealous of his position? Whatever the reason, the price seemed extremely high for something so inconsequential.
"So...what are you doing back there exactly?" He had his eyes closed still as he relaxed from the pain being relieved.
A large lump formed in Avy’s throat while she pondered an acceptable answer. “Ahhh…just something my Mum taught me. You know.. one of those things that gets passed down in your family from one child to the next. It’s a secret that has gone back to …well before the disappearance of the last Avatar I think. Maybe longer. “'Well ..it's the truth!!' she continued in her thoughts.
As her focus was swayed from its particular task, a bit of the circling water splashed onto the young man’s muscled back. ‘Focus!!’ her mind screamed while her hand moved abruptly to return the water back into the small barrel at her side. She took the damp cloth that she’d placed for distraction and mopped up the cool liquid before it could run down his waist. “Sorry!! It’s hard for me to …work and talk at the same time. I haven’t had enough less…I mean haven’t done this all that often. Usually my mother does the healing since she’s far better. “
The runaway’s hands shook in reaction to the link being broken so abruptly and the loss of her own energy. Shivering once again, she pulled her arms closer to her body and winced when the binding began rubbing the tender skin above her waist. “I wish we had a nice pot of Jar ling tea.” she hummmed barely above a whisper. “But if wishes were ever to come true then the Avatar would be walking the nations as we speak.” The ‘boy’ scoffed while taking the torn strips of her mother’s southern tribe dress and began wrapping them around his chest. She pressed her lips together as her fingers touched his pale skin. ‘Why should this bother me? He’s just …someone who’s hurt. I’ve healed some of the kids at home.’ her brows came together a bit as she recalled the few incidents and noted that the oldest had been five. ‘So…okay he’s a bit older..’
Her clear eyes peered down at his pointed locks that nearly glowed in the hazy light of the cargo hold. Shaking her head in confusion at the strange feelings, Avy pressed herself upward from the floor. “That was a stupid comment. Guess I just remember my Mum giving me tea whenever I was ill. Why don’t you rest while I get some food together. You’ll need it to regain your strength and help your body heal that wound."

As he waited for the answer, he slowly felt the skin on his back change. He felt flakes of old skin peeling away and fall as the odd feeling overwhelmed his back side. The boy seemed to hesitate at first, something the stranger had done quite often. Perhaps the boy was just nervous all the time, however he doubted that. Her mother? Not many boys were taught anything like that...even while home. Most of the time the boys and girls were almost always 'separated'. The men learned to become obedient students and fighters while the females learned how to...well he never knew what they learned. He was a different case on the other hand although his upbringing as a child could have been similar to another boy's. He was taught the way of the sword...and then developed that into something his own.
"From your mother?" Kyakou fell silent for a moment as he mulled the thought over again. "That surprises me a bit..." His voice trailed off as he felt a few gobs of water splash across his bare back. The water was refreshing, yet slightly cold at the same time. He didn't mind, although it gave him a better idea what may have been going on back there. Certainly she didn't have any medical supplies in her bag when he checked last time...and from what he knew...water couldn't mend a burn. It was an odd property. Kyakou's eyes opened realizing he hadn't even thanked the stranger.
"I'm sorry...but I forgot to say...thank you." He whispered in a soft voice to his care taker. He felt the stranger's hands wrap a cloth material around him, presumably what he had heard ripping a few moments ago. It was soft and comforted him a little. His back still felt a bit raw, however the intense burning sensation left his body almost completely. He moved slowly at first, almost hesitant since he didn't feel like having an burning back again. He realized that he could move a bit better. His skin was less restricted now. He slowly rose up after he felt the cloth wrap tied firmly around his back. He looked over to the boy with a half smile on his face. "You're not too bad I guess...kind of unfortunate that I had to haul you in back there." He chuckled a bit as he rubbed the back of his snow white hair.
He blinked his eyes for a moment as he listened to the stranger reminisce about tea. Jar Ling tea...he actually never heard of many tea types. He wasn't a connoisseur of the drink, although he had a fondness for tea itself. Glancing over to the pot of water he thought for a moment. He could try to warm it up...but he supposed that might not end too well. He shrugged slightly, not feeling the strict skin scream back at him this time. "I don't need...to rest." He shook his head for a moment. "I can...try to warm that water...but...theres only one little problem..." Kyakou trailed off, his voice slightly quaking a bit. "I really can't...bend that well...under certain circumstances and...I don't want to hurt you or myself." He smiled slightly, almost laughing at his own folly. He thought for a moment...was this person perhaps a water bender? it would make sense from the stories he had heard and the explanation the stranger gave him for knowing how to treat burns. Out of curiosity...Kyakou formulated a simple plan in his head. "Hey...can you bring that water over here?" Perhaps the stranger wouldn't even think twice if they were actually a water bender.

When the injured young man questioned her mother’s instruction, Avy nodded with a puzzled expression. “Surprises you? “ She gave a small shrug which of course he couldn’t see since he was lying on his stomach. Her voice lowered significantly as she added in a rush, “ I never knew my father..” The water bender shifted her body revealing her growing discomfort with this particular subject. The last thing she wanted to talk about was the great General Liang.
When her new companion offered his thanks, she released the tense breath she’d been holding while her face openly revealed her astonishment . Avy thought fire benders never offered thanks to anyone. All of the bender’s she‘d met, especially her father, assumed that they deserved everyone to be at their beckoning and words of appreciation were not necessary. But the runaway could hear the honesty in the young official‘s voice.
“You’re welcome.” she returned softly while shyly lifting her aqua eyes to meet his and she froze. She stared somewhat stunned at seeing how different he looked with a smile on his face. It made him appear less intimidating and….quite handsome. Avy couldn’t stop her lips from rising upward into a dimpled grin when she heard him let out a small chuckle. Her gaze lowered when he brought up having to take her to the internment station. Peaking back up, she found him nervously raking his hand through his spiky tresses.
"I don't need...to rest." He shook his head for a moment.
The cross dresser had been about to mention how important sleep was to his recuperation when he offered to help warm the water . 'Of course how could I have forgotten!! He’s a fire bender.!!' she remonstrated but was brought short as his voice shook when he went on to confess that he had some difficulty with his bending. Avy ’s eyes widened in surprise for most of the boy’s on the island who were benders had been rounded up and given intense instruction at the fire nation schools. She on the other hand, had been forced to learn how to bend on her own with her mother doing her best to describe her own grandmother's healing techniques.
“It’s okay….I understand… “ She started but at realizing what she’d just let slip out, went on stuttering, “..I..I mean there are somethings I am still working to get better at do..doing…” ‘That was stupid! Grrr.. ‘ “..Like my bow. I practice all the time.” Releasing a long deep breath, she gave him a nervous smile but was enjoying his more approachable demeanor.
"Hey...can you bring that water over here?" Perhaps the stranger wouldn't even think twice if they were actually a water bender.
“Oh …sure!! “ Avy breathed in relief glad that he hadn’t caught her short comment. The water bender put down the berries she’d been about to give the boy and leaned down and picked up the small barrel. Holding it tight to her chest, she walked toward him.

Kyakou fell silent for a moment as the stranger whispered about his father. It brought him back to his childhood. The small time that he did remember was parent less for the most part. The closest thing he remembered was his mentor that taught him how to use a sword. That was probably the only person that even resembled anything of a family to him. "At least you had a family." He muttered lowly, not being able to recount everything from his childhood. He looked at the stranger's face again and something still bothered him in the back of his head. The look was just...well..off to be blunt. Something was there...some layer of mystery that needed to be peeled away.
He felt a bit more calm as the stranger glanced at him in the eyes. Yet again, that feeling came back and nagged at the back of his thoughts. Perhaps there was more to the boy than he had originally thought. Maybe...just maybe he could find something out. "So...what was your name again? I kind of forgot it...heh." He smiled slightly again remembering back to the conversation back in the basement of the 'clearance and officials' building. He looked back at the jar of water for a moment thinking how he could warm it.
The stranger stuttered yet again. Of course this caught his attention again, perhaps the boy really was nervous, however instinct told him this wasn't the case. Kyakou would continue to dig around and find some truth. He blinked for a moment at the jar before taking it into his own hands. He concentrated for a moment trying to remember how he was taught to bend. This was of course not an easy task. He remembered back to what he had heard the few times that someone tried to instruct him. Focus on something that angered you in the past and expand on it. Or you could simply focus on creating the flame...which was probably a bit harder for a lot of other students. He couldn't work with either. He sat there for what seemed like a good five minutes.
Nothing happened yet, until he felt a bit of warmth spread throughout his hands. His eyes lighted up slightly at the feeling as he never really was able to do such a 'simple' feat with bending without his sword. For a moment the warm water began to steam from the jar. It seemed under control until it began to bubble and boil. Worrying slightly Kyakou tried to concentrate on settling the warmth in his hands down, however nothing happened. He wished that he wasn't so different. The water soon burst from the jar in an upward fashion from being heated. The boiling water came sprinkling down on him, which made him flinch slightly at how hot it was.
"Gah!" Kyakou almost yelped in astonishment. Blinking for a moment, he felt the warmth leave his hands as he held the pot there still. He was silent for a moment before letting out a bit of a chuckle. "That's...what I kind of meant earlier..." Not even caring about his semi wet clothing, Kyakou sat there for a moment before opening his mouth. "I...never had parents or anything like that." He began as he looked over at the sky. "I could never find someone to teach me bending...the teachers in my village...all thought everyone learned the same way. I...couldn't learn that way and...yeah." he stopped for a moment as he ran his hand through his spiky white hair. "I was taught...by my swordsmanship instructor...sort of so...I can only bend with my sword." Kyakou shrugged his shoulders not feeling the restriction from his burn wound on his back. "You must be able to bend though if you have...that healing power...although I've never heard of anything like it."

The water in the small barrel sloshed over the edge at hearing the young man’s muttered comment that had caught her unawares. ‘He doesn’t’ have anyone? Did his parent’s die? ’ Her eyes sadly meeting his.
“My name? Oh… “ she started but halted feeling a bit guilty lying to her new companion. Avy shifted from one foot to the other uncomfortably but was soon distracted by the look of concentration on the white haired boy’s face. She watched in amazement as his emerald eyes seemed to gleam while the water in the jar began to simmer then spatter from the vessel. A slow smile grew on the girl’s face as she watched the fire bender bring the liquid to a steady boil. Avelen was so entranced by watching him bend, that she was unprepared when the jar exploded. “Hua!” she gasped. Jerking backward, the water bender’s hands rose instinctively and she sent the majority of the scalding liquid or steam to the ground.
She quickly lowered her hands and scanned him for any further injuries. His safety and fear that he’d been scalded by the boiling water took precedence over all other concerns including his learning about her being a water bender. Picking up a strip of the bright blue fabric that had at one time been her mother’s dress, she began patting him down.
“I think you did great! No really!“ she started breathlessly before giving him a small smile. “It’s hard to learn things.…without a proper teacher.“ Avy personally knew the truth of his words for she still didn’t have the greatest control when it came to water bending. Her hands gently patted his back in comfort when he spoke of not having known his parents. The face of her mother slipped into her mind and she was thankful for having her loving mother’s presence in her life.
“I ..guess we have a lot in common.“ The auburn haired girl murmured softly. “I was taught how to use my bow ..but I really wasn’t taught …other things that I …wish I knew how to do..” Avy shook her head at how stupid her last comment sounded before beginning to clean up the broken glass.
She’d just picked up one of the larger pieces from the top of the crate when he blurted out, "You must be able to bend though if you have...that healing power...although I've never heard of anything like it." Her head jerked fearfully upward and a fairly large shard dug into her right forefinger bringing a gasp of pain from her bow shaped lips. “I…what ..I don’t know what you’re talking about…” She tried to argue while slowing moving baby step by baby step toward the hatch.

Kyakou closed his eyes as the sound of the eruption startled him at first. He was waiting to feel the hot water scorch across his skin, however after a few seconds, this sensation never came. He slowly opened one emerald eye and then the other to notice the water had some how collected around them, not even touching either him or the stranger. Blinking for a moment, he sat there puzzled. Surely the water had to have splashed on them. There was no way it couldn't unless....he paused there as the stranger's voice interrupted his thought. He frowned slightly looking back at the ground and water that had ceased to give off steam.
Heaving a sigh, Kyakou looked over to the stranger who he still had no name to really call. He was beginning to grow very suspicious as to why the stranger was avoiding his questions all the time. The voice although low caught his attention still. A lot in common. He supposed they had a little in common, however there was that feeling that there was something more. He couldn't place a finger on exactly what that was, however he knew he'd dig it up eventually. His eyes wandered to the broken jar as the boy whisked up the pieces into a neat pile and began placing them onto a nearby crate.
He noticed he caught the stranger this time with something he said. The sudden jerk of the head and stuttering came back to the stranger. The stranger began to deny what he was talking about. Kyakou noticed that now the stranger had become...fearful perhaps. He began to inch away from him, perhaps afraid now that a secret was about to be revealed. He blinked for a moment in confusion before trying to relax a bit. The best thing he could do now was not to scare off his caretaker, let alone somewhat of a friend now. The white-haired individual casually laid back on the cloak that he was sitting on and folded his hands behind his head in a relaxation state.
"Well, I'm just saying...I don't know of a single person in the Fire Nation that has quite that ability...it would even make me think you were from..." He stopped his sentence there...and on purpose. He let a few seconds pass by before opening his mouth again. "Not that it matters to me...I've been everywhere and I've seen quite a bit." He paused again hoping that the stranger wouldn't flee now that he hinted that he knew what was going on. Of course he suspected the stranger of hiding something and most likely this stranger was from another Nation trying to hide perhaps. He closed his eyes taking in another deep breath. "Besides...its not like I'm going to..." His voice began to lower to a whisper for fear of someone eavesdropping on them. "Turn you in or anything. I can't really go back there." Kyakou's eyes flickered open slightly as he bent his head a random direction, referring to the island that had been on. He laid there and let his words sink in a bit more before opening his mouth once again. "I'm...Kyakou by the way." He may as well give his name first...it was only fair. The white-haired boy slowly sat up from his original position, waiting to see the stranger's reaction. His face winced slightly at the small sting from his raw back.

Avy bit her bottom lip and pressed one of the rag strips to the cut on her finger. Her eyes lifted nervously upward to find the young man looking over at her with his disturbing emerald gaze. ‘Had he seen her bend the steaming water? Would he take her back to the fire nation and into her father’s reach once again?’ Her thoughts sent her inching instinctively backward.
The water bender halted her movement in confusion when the fire nation official leaned backward and relaxed . Avy licked her lips when he spoke of her healing talent which inferred that she was not a child of the Fire Nation. He had no idea how she wished his words were in fact the truth. She held her breath while she gripped the azure scrap of cloth that spoke of her water tribe roots a bit tighter. It was a bit confusing when the young boy went on to share with her that he was not in the least alarmed if she was not like many of their compatriots.
As the room grew to silence, the auburn haired girl stared at her new companion with great interest. His untroubled manner somehow quieted her unease but it was his whispered comment that soothed her greatest fear. "…turn you in or anything. I can't really go back there."
Avalen released the tense breath she’d been holding and took a few steps back toward the injured boy. Her body relaxed a great deal at hearing his name and she gave him a shy smile. At seeing the pain on his face, she took a few hasty steps toward him. “You really shouldn’t ..ummm move around just yet…Kyakou.” She said in a soft voice as a small war waged within over how much she should reveal about herself. “I guess you figured out that I’m a water bender but...” Avy began her eyes altered from the wooden floor and back to his riveting green eyes. “..but I was born on one of the Fire Nation islands and I..I CAN’T go back there…”
She lifted the small rag from the cut on her finger and with a small wave of her hand, had a small stream of water rise from the small cask and revolve around her wound. Over the next few moments while she worked on the cut, the water bender struggled at revealing her true name. Finally, when the cut turned into a thin red line, she tucked a red curl behind her ear and murmured faintly, “ I’m Avelen.” The young girl kept her eyes cast downward in fear; frightened that he might have heard her name mentioned in connotation with her father but worst of all, how he would react to learning that she was a girl.

Tilting his white-haired head to the side to get a better look at the stranger from his current position, he glanced at the expression laid upon his face. He was worried for a moment that the stranger was about to ditch him...leave in fear of him. His heart felt heavy as he waited for the few moments that passed by. It seemed like an eternity wait before he noticed the stranger appear to be come a bit more comfortable. The heavy heart that had set in quickly began to lighten up if even for a moment at the stranger's slow return back to his position near him. Returning his gaze to the sky, he noticed the clouds gliding ever so gracefully across the open ocean above. Albeit it was starting to get a bit dark, but they were still visible.
His eyes wandered back to the stranger who took a few quick steps towards him. This caught him by surprise at first. He blinked his soft emerald eyes for a moment realizing the stranger was still caring for him. His back which hadn't been in as much pain as it was before was a nice feeling. The whole burning sensation was gone now, although the skin was a bit raw whenever he moved around slightly. It still wasn't as bad of pain as it was a little while ago. Blinking his eyes again, he glanced over to the stranger who finally admitted to one of his secrets. "Water Bender..." The words slipped out of his mouth slowly and in a very quiet fashion as he thought for a moment. He took notice of the stranger's eyes glaring at the wooden floor of the ship, almost in shame.
He wanted to say something to console the rather downtrodden stranger, however he couldn't think of anything. The only thing that came to mind was what he was already doing. Reaching over with one hand, he placed it gently on the stranger's shoulder as he listened to more from the stranger. Much to his surprise, the stranger was born in the Fire Nation...however something deep down made him not want to go back. Perhaps something with the past...or a bad run in with locals or authorities. Come to think of it...the run in he had with the stranger was probably mild compared to other islands.
He watched curiously as the stranger removed a small makeshift bandage from his finger and drew over a small portion of water. It was a marvel to watch as the water slowly wrapped itself around the wound. It slender form bubbled and glittered for a moment before closing up the small wound. His ears perked up a bit as he heard a murmur from the stranger...a murmur of a name. Furrowing his white brows for a moment he sat there confused for a moment before thinking back to his office. "Avelen..." He muttered as he pondered his thoughts. It certainly wasn't a boy's name...that was for sure. The little shrieks the stranger gave off while in his office and such...so it was. The stranger was a girl after all. He had his few minor suspicions, however this confirmed it. His soft emerald eyes now looked over the face of Avelen, however she was still staring her eyes at the ground. He certainly had never heard of the name before...even though he was in a more 'elite' group of individuals. This wasn't a surprise as everything was probably on a 'need to know basis'...and of course he being a 'traitor' didn't 'need to know'. "Avelen...I don't look at you any different than I did before." He swallowed the lump in his throat that formed now that he had finally revealed the truth about the stranger. "You're quite a kind soul...even if you do get in trouble a bit." He smiled, slightly nudging her in her shoulder to hopefully cheer her up.

Avy’s eyes lifted cautiously upward to peek at the Kyakou’s warm smile as he nudged her shoulder. His whole demeanor was far different from the man she’d met on the docks only three days ago. She was a bit ..uncomfortable with his knowing that she was a girl. Was it because she didn’t want him to belittle her abilities and look down on her as many of the boys on the island? No…it was ..more. There was something different stirring within her that she didn’t quite understand. His smile had her stomach doing tiny little flip flops. “ Oh..! “ Her cheeks filled with color as she brushed a copper curl from her eyes. “My Mum did say I tended to land in the middle of a storm far too often for her piece of mind.” The teen added with a shy smile before growing a bit more serious.
“I didn’t mean for you to become involved in my ..problems. To tell the truth, I don’t understand why that man …aimed that fireball at you. He couldn’t have known who I was …” she paused for quite some time while looking nervously over to the doorway that led to the deck of the ship. “I couldn’t leave you there…he might have killed you and …that little girl as well. “ Her aqua eyes rose to meet his once again. “ I ..umm had to stop them from getting to you and..I attacked them. Since they saw me pick you up and know that I‘m a water bender, they might think..you’re a traitor... and I'm sorry. I dont' know what to do to ...help make things right for you."

He sat there for a moment thinking he didn't do the right thing as the girl's head didn't lift up for a moment. His heart sank slightly before Avelen's head began to look up at him to see the smile he still held on his face. She seemed a bit nervous still, however not as much as she was previously. Perhaps holding in all those secrets had gotten to her. Finally being able to let them out was probably a relief to her, or he thought it would have been. He watched as she blushed slightly, perhaps a bit embarrassed now about what she had revealed about herself to him already. Now if they were still on the island and in a different situation...this might have worked out entirely different. However here they were getting along for the most part.
Her smile was something to marvel at for the split moment it was there. He didn't remember her smiling at all before, not even while they were on the island but of course who would want to smile if they were taken into custody? Placing the thought away, the white-haired teen looked over to listen to his new found companion. He hesitated for a moment, thinking back to what had happened. He was running near the docks, heard a voice and bam. The pain was immense for a moment before he was waking up here on the ship. The slight sway of the ship could be felt as the ocean spray misted above the sides every so often. Her eyes were something as well. They reminded him somewhat of his own which surprised him at first for noticing it finally. "Don't worry, I'm already on their 'not to like list'." He let out a small laugh as he glanced up to the sky again. It was now a bit more dark, however the stars had not yet begun to shine.
They were hidden well enough away on the ship. Of course they were probably stowaways, although perhaps Avelen had cut a deal with the Captain. He didn't know, however he didn't care to get caught either just in case it wasn't the latter. "So...how about that tea?" He smiled weakly looking over to the pot that had caused trouble earlier. "I could try again...although I'll actually use the way I taught myself." His stomach gave a low growl as he blushed slightly. Rubbing the back of his white hair, he smiled out of slight embarrassment. "I guess...I'm more hungry than I thought."

Following Kyakou’s gaze, Avelen peered through the small opening above the ship’s storage hold and noticed dusk’s swift approach. Only recently had she truly realized how insignificant her life was to the threads of destiny. No matter what occurred in the world below, the sun and moon still danced. Each took their turn to rule the sky while below the ever darkening canopy a young water bender’s world had been changed in merely four such mundane patterns through the heavens.
The young girl shook her head before making certain once again that the boxes she’d moved earlier still covered their presence. It would not bode well for them if they were spotted by one of the fire nation sailors moving about on the upper deck . Her attention was brought back to the handsome young man as he revealed ever so subtly that his comrades distaste for him had caused the attack on the docks.
Avy’s smile grew to the point that her dimples now dipped inward slightly on either cheek as she reacted to his warming laughter.
Tucking a wayward strand from her face and slipping it behind her right ear, the water bender prepared to gather up the rest of the broken glass when Kyakou offered to try heating the water once again but was interrupted by his growling stomach. A small giggle slipped out while she watched him rub the back of his head in embarrassment. Somehow the simple action made her realize how close in age they really were.
His position on the mainland made him seem so much older…and intuitively the runaway sensed that his life had been far far different from hers. Reaching over to gather up the wooden bowl filled with berries and a dried meat of some sort, Avelen squatted down and handed it gently to him. “It’s not hot but…perhaps after you’ve eaten we can try working together on making that tea?”
The water bender rose to her feet and skirted between two large barrels before reaching one of the boxes near the very back, her voice whispering just loud enough for Kyakou to hear. “Other than being a bit …cold, it’s kind of fun being in here. Each time I opened one of the boxes to find things to help your burn, I found so many interesting tidbits!!” She paused for a moment while the sound of scraping and rummaging could be heard as she worked. she pulled a fancy jade tea set. With shaky hands, fearful of loosing her grasp, the auburn haired girl carried a fancy jade tea set back to their sheltered little niche.
“I found this earlier and I… I didn’t want to use it. “ she looked shyly at Kykou while placing each small cup on the top of the box that she used as a table then added the matching ceramic teapot. “ I can see some young man waiting for this beautiful set to give his wife or ..umm…girlfriend and I didn’t want to be my normal klutzy self and ruin it. I do have a tendency for accidents...” Once again her blue green eyes sparkled with inner humor. “..but I’ll be sure to put it back once we’re done. “
While the white haired boy ate, Avy brought the cask of water over to their ‘table’ and then moved toward the sword which lay just off to the side by her bag. She wrapped her hands around the sword’s sheath and lifted it upward from the floor, her eyes instantly revealing her surprise at how heavy the blade felt in her tiny hands. The sword shook a bit as she carried the intimidating weapon to his side. How many times had she seen her father striding down the hall to her mother’s quarters with a huge sword at his side much like this one? Bladed weapons had never really interested Avy. The bow that the gardener had made for her was light and smooth in her hands. Tai Pai had created the bow and spent long hours teaching her how to shoot. He also showed her various ways to use the intricately carved weapon in hand to hand combat.
The runaway laid the sword by his side within easy reach before hastening to gather some of the tea leaves for their hopeful brew.
