Lei had been closing one end of the tunnel to protect those within, when she heard another woman’s voice scream form just over her left shoulder. Though the dust and ash impeded her vision, the earth bender’s honey eyes flashed ever so slightly when she heard the name of the monster wreaking destruction within the pleading tone. ‘Ignis?’ she burned the name to memory. No ..she would not forget that name..ever.. The obsidian haired young woman watched with a pride filled heart as her fellow earth benders began attacking the greatest threat to their people at the moment; A fire bender called Ignis.
While her compatriots battled their enemy, Lei rushed forward to guide the small group within the tunnel to safety. She heard a loud scream from behind and winced in fear for the men who battled the crazed murderer. "Hurry toward the water…take as many as you can find with you.” she ordered before moving back trough he tunnel. Just as she was closing the tube of stone to eliminate access to the small group, she felt a sharp pain in her right shoulder. Gasping, eyes wide, Lei spun around in shock and locked eyes with Ignis for a few moments.
She saw a young woman staring in horror at the man who’d just attacked her and noticed the water spinning about her body. A numbing sensation began surging through her flesh as her mind screamed out in rage and hatred. Using her last bit of energy as she sank to the ground, the earth bender struck the ground with her knees and hands forming a huge culvert. Dirt, stone and vegetation buckled as a trough swept toward the port. Just before she lost total control over her muscles, Lei’s honey eyes met the water benders. “Help..them…must ..stop..im.”
She then felt rough hands spinning her round and binding her arms and legs. All sense of feeling was lost as she laid unmoving upon the ground…her anger and rage growing along with her helplessness. The sound of surging water sloshing up the culvert which she’d just created, the sound bringing forth a surge of hope.

Mouth wide in surprise, Katara staggered at the sight of Ignis’s demented onslaught. She gasped at hearing the young man’s pain filled words which spoke of a child forced into watching is parents die and pressed to find any possible way to care for his small sister. The water bender shook her head and her hands tightened to fists for she understood the pain of loosing a parent. Hadn’t she, as a small girl, dreamed of making the fire bender who’d killed her mother pay for his crime? The brunette’s ash covered head swung to take in the total obliteration that he wrought. A great sadness shown from her cerulean eyes and she knew that even with the anger burning still within her heart, she would never take her anger out on the innocent…never.
Katara’s attention was quickly brought back to Ignis as he attacked the earth bender who was aiding a small group of people to safety. As he jabbed something into the caring girl’s shoulder, the water bender took a few steps forward to halt his attack only to find his victim plummeting to the ground. For the shortest of moments, tawny eyes met hers as she heard the ebony haired young woman’s plea. “Help..them…must ..stop..im.”
Then, the earth shook beneath Katara’s feet as the injured girl’s hands hit the ground and formed a huge culvert that seemed to ripple across the ground toward the sea. Before she knew what was happening, Ingis had tied his enemy and raced off down a darkened alleyway. She had taken a few steps forward to aid the young woman when the sound of water rushing forward caught her attention. ‘She did this …to help me fight him. With her last breath..this young earth bender sent her the element she would need to protect the innocent.’ Swallowing hard, she hurried after Ignis…to halt his assault on those who’d done him no harm…perhaps she could reason with him but if not….she WOULD do her best to stop his diabolical attacks.
The water bender stopped suddenly when she saw a strange girl speaking to Ignis. Her brows furrowed when she saw him reach out to touch what appeared to be a burn on her left side. Katara leaned against the ruined stone wall and listened as they spoke.

To Ignis' first comment, Mai smiled a very small broken smile that faded in almost an instant. "Yeah." Mai agreed quietly, the words so quiet, flinching slightly at watching his pain transferred from her burns. Mai reached out slowly to him, gently brushing his face with her cool hands, removing the tears that stubbornly remained along with all the other wetness that remained. To his second comment, she merely stayed silent. After a while of her golden eyes being glued to his face, she finally spoke, her Topaz eyes melting and going up slowly to meet his emerald green ones.
"I'm not afraid of you, Ignis. I never expected this. I was surprised that... that man was you. I never knew you had a grudge against the Earth Kingdom." Mai told him quietly, placing one gloved hand on his shoulder slowly as she heard movement behind her. Mai span around slowly, rising to face the young water bender girl. Her face was already an automatic mask of no emotion. "Hello there." Mai nodded, her voice empty, nothing there.
"Lovely day, isn't it?" Mai said, somewhat sarcastic in her dull tone as she slowly leaned against the wall, looking up at the bruning buildings with an almost disinterest in the burning wood with the smoke twirling in the air.

As soon as Mai finished her sentence, Ignis quickly wrapped his arms around her, his tears gone and then he kisser her. Ignis' eyes were shut during the kiss. Mai had accepted Ignis, as Ignis had accepted Mai. Ignis then let go of the kiss, blushing. "The Earth Kingdom killed my parents...I'm sorry Mai..." Ignis said to her. Ignis then saw her notice something.
Ignis turned to the direction and saw the water bender who had healed him earlier from serious injuries. Ignis got up and walked to Katara, his hands up as he did showing that he wasn't going to attack her. "Katara...The Earth Kingdom killed my parents...The eight year old boy and the six year old girl, who were stranded on a piece of driftwood in the oceon for four days...Was me and my sister..." Ignis said to her. Ignis' tears began to appear again as he said these words with hate, against the Earth Kingdom. "It wouldn't bother them...It wouldn't bother them if two little children had died!" Ignis said raising his voice. "Their biggest mistake...was letting me and my sister live in the first place...I'm going to find that colonel in Ba Sing Se...And kill him!" Ignis said. "Do you know what it feels like? Do you! To lose your loved ones!" Ignis said. He wasn't sure wether he was crossing the line or not, but everyone was effected by the war here.

Katara listened intently as the pretty ebony haired girl spoke gently to Ignis and wiped the tears from the young man’s eyes. She could see in the short interchange that there was something … deeper going on between the two. The water bender had been focused on understanding why Ignis had done such a venomous attack on this small town when she was taken totally by surprise as the girl spun about to look in her direction and say in the deadest voice she’d ever heard, "Lovely day, isn't it?"
The brunette swallowed a large gulp of air when she realized that her position had been compromised. She watched somewhat dismayed as the deranged fire bender hugged the emotionless girl to his chest and then kissed her soundly. ‘They’re..he…oh my.’ Katara thought her azure eyes widened in surprise and her chin rose upward at the heartless comment. “No. I don’t think it's a LOVELY DAY! “ She stated soundly while taking a few steps forward her baby blue eyes revealing her disappointment and anger. “Anyone who finds murder and destruction lovely is heartless…”
No sooner had the words slipped from her lips when Ignis’s eyes locked onto hers and he moved toward her. His sad story tugged at Katara’s heart and the tears forced her to swallow the lump that had formed in her throat. There was a few moments of silence as he expressed his anger and rage at his parents' murder. But at his inquery she stomped forward her head whipping up and down. “YES..oh yes Ignis. I KNOW what it’s like to loose my mother to none other than a Fire nation soldier who came looking for me!…ME!!! Oh yes ….I was little older than your sister when I slipped past my father who tried to block the doorway only to see her laying there on the floor eyes staring sightlessly upward. I know what it’s like and I want deep inside to find that man as well…and make him play but..”
The water bender paused to wave her hands around at the demolished town that was bathed in smoke and flame. “This…this was wrong Ignis…so very wrong. These people didn’t hurt your parents …innocent children and women …they didn’t kill your parents. Now there are children here much like you and your sister the seed of hate burning once again in their hearts…the desire for revenge. When does it stop Ignis? When? Who stops the mad circle that continues from one generation to the next? Will it only end when we’ve destroyed the whole world?”
A few tears slipped down Katara’s cheeks and she brushed them angrily away. “That's why I'm helping Aang, Ignis. He made me see that I had to put my selfishness aside if there is ever to be peace for the children to come. A peace that can unite our world. You have to stop Ignis or …I will have to stop you myself.” The words which in the beginning had a thread of compassion ended with firm conviction. 'Aang...Sokka..where are you? I need your help....even with the earth bender's sacrifice I'm not sure I am good enough to fight both Ignis and his friend.'

Ignis was shocked by Katara. “YES..oh yes Ignis. I KNOW what it’s like to loose my mother to none other than a Fire nation soldier who came looking for me!…ME!!! Oh yes ….I was little older than your sister when I slipped past my father who was blocking the doorway to find her laying there on the floor her eyes staring upward. I know what it’s like and I want deep inside to find that man as well…and make him play but..” She screamed.
This girl and Ignis were both similiarly damaged by the war and it's effect. "You may or may not have realised this, but we're both damaged...I'm not trying to convince you to join us...I'm just saying" Ignis said. Katara added. “This…this was wrong Ignis…so very wrong. These people didn’t hurt your parents …innocent children and women …they didn’t kill your parents. Now there are children here much like you and your sister the seed of hate burning once again in their hearts…the desire for revenge. When does it stop Ignis? When? Who stops the mad circle that continues from generation to the next? Will it only end when we’ve destroyed the whole world?” Katara then said.
"Then tell me...If I or her... If I killed your mother, which I didn't, killed your brother, killed Aang and killed every other person you loved...Would you spare my life? Would you end my life, deaming it unworthy? Would you kill my sister? Would you kill Mai?" Ignis asked making a good point to this similiarly damaged girl. "There's only one way how this war will win..." Ignis said. "And that's with one nation destroying two others...like what happened to the Air Nomads..." Ignis said.
“That's why I'm helping Aang, Ignis. He made me see that I had to put my selfishness aside if there is ever to be peace for the children to come. A peace that can unite our world. You have to stop Ignis or …I will have to stop you myself.” Katara said to him. These words struck Ignis like a stab in the heart. Ignis grip on reality was almost lost. A finger left as grip. Ignis' eyes went red and bloodshot with tears, his face teared out. Ignis was now emotionally drained. "If your not with me...Your my enemy!" Ignis shouted. Ignis would fight Katara if he had to, but he was too confused to know when to stop.

“No. I don’t think it's a LOVELY DAY! “ She stated soundly while taking a few steps forward her baby blue eyes revealing her disappointment and anger. “Anyone who finds murder and destruction lovely is heartless…” "I was being sarcastic..." Mai said in a detached tone, leaning against what was left of a building on her left, examining her black nails.
Mai heard their conversation going along, background noise until about halfway through, where she started to listen, her eyes getting a fraction of a centimeter wider. She couldn't say she didn't agree with the young water bender girl about the destruction of the town, taking the innocents lives. But it seemed to have become a Fire Nation trait as well, not caring about the loss of a natural life. Mai stubbornly sticked to her opinion of Ignis caring, though his parents had been killed, and the Earth Nation hadn't cared. Mai could see both of their points, and she did not like the position.
"Ignis, please..." Mai spoke for the first time in the long while, placing a pale hand on his shoulder, a hint of desperation in her features. "He was fine, Katara. He was finished. He saw what he'd done. You're only making it worse." Mai told Katara sharply, her tone a bit more pointed with a slight bit of rage. Mai could see Ignis was getting angry quickly, and she didn't want him to go insane again, especially not to kill this girl, no matter how annoying and perky she came off to be.

Zuko emerged from the half closed entrance. His clothes were covered with soot and he was coughing a lot. After he had rested for a while, he had made up his mind. He went to stop the man that some of the survivors coming in, Called a Demon. He still didn't have his father bending capabilities, but two brave Earth Kingdom Soldiers came with him, so he couldn't use it anyway. It was funny. He had recovered but... he just couldn't fire bend. Once he reached the top he saw Katara standing over a young female earthbender, He then looked farther to see a man like his own age and... Mai... with her hand on the fiend's shoulder. He unsheathed his swords and walked to Katara's side. One of the soldiers took the young earth bender inside the entrance. He looked back.
"Close it." Zuko said in a quiet tone. The looked shocked but then sealed themselves inside the arena. He looked at the 'fiend'... He recognized him... Ignis... He was a duelist from the fire nation. A good one. He just caught Mai's last sentence when he emerged.
"Mai..." Zuko whispered to himself. Katara could probably hear it though. Zuko stepped in front of Katara and with a clang, shifted his swords into an x shape and went into a defensive position glaring at Ignis.

A slight piece of Ignis' sanity was recovered once again by Mai. Ignis nodded and smiled to her. Ignis walked back to Mai and put his hand on Mai's. Ignis was kind to Mai and loved her because no matter what Ignis had done, she accepted him and wouldn't cast him out like someone with a fatal disease, no matter what he would or had done. Their was only one person like Mai who Ignis knew and that was his sister Serenity.
But just before Ignis was about to leave it all their and return to his sane, kind, cheery and fair self, it was suddenly all gone. Zuko, the banished prince, charged in, held his swords to Ignis in an aggressive pose. This small act of aggresion caused Ignis' chance of sanity to shatter into the tinyest pieces imaginable. Ignis looked at the Zuko in a serious though insane look. "Out of my way cyclops!" Ignis shouted. Though he was too insane to think. Ignis before anyone could say anything, shifted his hands into fists and then he quickly moved his arms back and forth. This caused two beams of fire to shoot at Zuko along with the bullet like flairs, which Ignis had used to partly defeat Lei in battle.

Zuko spun his swords in circular motion to deflect the fire from him and Katara. He deflected some of the bullet like things Ignis had shot at him the others ripped through his already severely damaged shirt some grazing his body.
"Katara... thank you for helping me. Let me return the favor..." Zuko said as he defended against Ignis' powerful firebending. It would be a challenge to stop Ignis... but... Katara and him could do it. Zuko didn't even remember what he needed to give to Katara. Everything was happening so fast. The Blast continued to heat his blades. He started to weakly firebend the fire away from him and the heat out of the blades so they wouldn't melt.

Mai turned her head to look at the new person that had arrived. Even before she could make out the details of his clothes, the color of his eyes, Mai knew who it was. Shock came across her face as she realized who it was, and she suddenly didn't know how to feel. Angry that he had burnt her hands before? Happy to see him? Whatever it should be, it wasn't there.
As she realized this, Ignis started yelling again and throwing fire at Zuko. There goes his sanity again... If Zuko could of showed up five minutes later... Mai thought, watching the small battle occur, wishing that neither one of them got hurt. Though, yes, she loved Ignis more than anything in the world and would never give him up for anything - she couldn't deny she still loved Zuko, even just the slightest bit.
"Just let us pass. We're not going to cause any harm anymore, and if he tries anything I'll stop him." Mai said loudly at a point where there wasn't any bending going on. Mai was standing straight and tall, her emotionless mask ever present. Of course, nobody seemed to listen. Mai sighed, flicking her hand ever so gently for the blades. She wasn't standing near Ignis anymore, but instead was standing in the middle of them, off to side as to not get hit by the flying fire.

“Oh..I didn’t know.” Katara stuttered at Mai’s flat toned comment on her use of sarcasm. The water bender’s eyes flicked back and forth between the two; one with feelings rising and falling like the waves within a storm while the other remained completely impassive.
Glittering eyes met Mai’s and then Ignis’s golden orbs. “You’re right. I would want revenge if someone killed my brother or Aang but I wouldn’t hurt someone who had nothing to do with their murder. So.. no I wouldn’t hurt Mai unless she tried to hurt me or any of the others." SHe paused for a moment before adding, " Ignis, I won’t let my people be killed off and herded like cattle as slaves for the Fire Nation. Destroying the earth and water nations only breeds further hatred and anger, can‘t you see that by what happened to you?” She pleaded in a soft shaky voice.
Jerking backward as the crazed boy called her his enemy, she waited for his attack. Never had she seen anyone's emotions fluctuate so quickly. She was grateful when the Mai broke through his angry deluge and calm the turbulent fury surging forth. Her brunette head nodded in recognition of the fire nation girl’s warning. “I understand.. “ She started but her gaze shifted at hearing booted feet climbing through the rubble. Bright azure eyes widened at finding none other than Zuko striding by her side. The other men gently lifted the fallen earth bender upward and carried her into the coliseum then closing the passageway as the fire bender ordered in a firm yet quiet voice.
Katara held her breath as the three fire nation youths looked at one another. She cut a quick look to Zuko as he whispered the pretty dark haired girl’s name. ’ Was she someone special to him? Mai is a friend of Azula’s so obviously he knows her Katara…’ she chided herself while her eyes remained ever vigilant for even the slightest move of aggression. Her brows furrowed at her present predicament, knowing that she would have been hard pressed to keep two opponents busy until Aang or Sokka arrived but…with the banished prince arriving.. Zuko took her completely by surprise when he pulled his swords out and stepped in front of her in a stance of protection; his swords reverberating one off the other.
Ignis’s face scoured as he instantly responded by screaming at the young man a few feet in front of her, "Out of my way cyclops!" No sooner were his words spoken than two streams of flame came sweeping towards them. “Zuko!!” she gasped in warning while her hands swept behind her in a call to the sea water which the earth bender had provided.
Her body tensed as the warrior spun his blades quickly around and deflected most of the surging fire but she noticed that the intense heat still penetrated the barrier to sear his chest. ‘Why didn’t he use his bending?’ the water bender thought in confusion. 'Is he still to weak from his injuries?'
Katara gulped a breath of air at the prince’s words of gratitude and his offer of protection. The whole situation just seemed so surreal for her to try and comprehend for merely a day or two ago the two had been facing one another as combatants. Zuko… hunting them with nearly the same steely conviction as Ignis.
She’d just begun to sweep her arms upward with the intent of forming a wall in front of Zuko when a female voice cried out, "Just let us pass. We're not going to cause any harm anymore, and if he tries anything I'll stop him." The two girl’s eyes met and in that moment Katara knew that if anyone could calm Ignis and get him stop his irratic behavior it was Mai.
Talking a step forward, the water bender gently touched the banished Prince’s arm. “She’s right, Zuko. Let her take him away from here. I’ve seen her with him and he…he'll listen to her.” ‘Yeah, they look at each other like…my parents used to look at one another when I was a kid..but I’m not telling Zuko. He kinda looks funny at her too.’ “We can help by stopping the fires and saving those who need us here.” ‘There will be another time to deal with Ignis and his toxic behavior.’ She thought giving the boy’s arm a small squeeze.

Destroying the earth and water nations only breeds further hatred and anger, can‘t you see that by what happened to you?” Katara said to Ignis.
At that moment Ignis gave up fighting with the banished prince and retracted his fire back into his hands where it grow smaller and smaller until it was gone. "Just let us pass. We're not going to cause any harm anymore, and if he tries anything I'll stop him." Mai then said. These words also convinced Ignis to stop fighting Zuko. Ignis gave a curtious nod to Zuko which meant "I'm sorry". Mai had yet again (assisted by Katara) brought back another piece of Ignis' sanity.
Ignis walked over to Mai and stood beside her. "I'm sorry...I'm really sorry." Ignis said to Mai, thinking about his mistakes. Ignis' hate for the Earth Kingdom almost cost Ignis his sanity, his love and probably his honour. Ignis looked at the massive fires which spread through the city. Playgrounds were burnt, swings slowly swinging back and forth as they burnt, see-saws breaking apart and small structures collapsing under the heat. Ignis went into a firebending stance before breathing in deeply and then out. As he breathed in, fire turned to steam and went into his body. Ignis kept the fire within his body for later.
"I'm sorry Katara..." Ignis said emotionlessly before clasping his hands to her as a sign of respect. Ignis was still quite confused and wasn't sure what he was doing. Ignis would save his fire for later to escape Gaoling without being captured or killed by Earthbenders. Ignis gave a weak smile to Mai and was happy that she was still with him and accepted him. Ignis then turned to Zuko and Katara. Ignis paused. "We'll help you put out the fire...just don't tell anyone that we did, 'k?" Ignis said to them.

{I'm not sure if they actually have gas and/or gas masks in Avatar. And I'm not too fond of the idea. So please remove it. Thanks}
Everything was a blur. The events around him had been happening so fast and there was a point along the way when Aang could've sworn that something had knocked him on the back of the head. The next thing he knew, he was rising to his feet. He lost his balance for a moment as a feeling of dizziness overwhelmed him. His head felt heavy and all of the loud noises around him were hurting his ears.
The airbender looked around the area and saw fire nation soldiers, earth kingdom soldiers, and countless other people fighting. But where were his friends? He couldn't find Zuko either. The one person that he recognized was the prince's uncle. He recognized him from the fire nation ship. Aang noticed that the old man wasn't fighting, he was just about the only person not fighting.
It was then that the avatar realized how badly the town had been destroyed. He could only assume that he was the one who had brought the destruction to such a quiet town. He hoped everyone was okay.
Looking over at Iroh again, he went over to him. "Have you seen Zuko? Or Katara??" he didn't have time to worry about whether or not he'd attack him, he was too worried about where his friends were and what was happening to them. And finding where Zuko was would probably help him because Zuko might be fighting Katara.

A burn grew in Lei’s stomach as she listened to the crackling flames licking at the heart of Gaoling and all she could do was lay helpless as a newborn upon the ground. She heard the exchange between the water bender and the demon spawn who’d attacked her homeland. ‘He’ll pay Somosa..Rienie,’ she repeated over and over in her mind as the pebbled dirt pressed into her cheek. The next thing she knew, Lei was being lifted by two of her compatriots and carried into the coliseum archway. She heard the rumbling of rock and stone as an earth benders sealed the cavern from the battle which continued to ensue mere feet beyond their protected den.
Lei soon felt the weather worn hands of an older woman untying her hands and feet. She then sensed pressure on the small puncture wound at her right shoulder but was still held silent by the substance the fire bender had placed on the dart.
“It’s an herb of some sort …that has her muscles paralyzed. Don’t know how to treat this other than wait for it to pass.” the rough voice of age commented to the earth benders.
“We need her up and ready to fight. I never would have known. Lei Ahn…an earth bender and a very good one at that!!” A deep bass voice added not far from her head. She thought it sounded like Kredzi but she wasn’t sure.
“Put her over on that blanket out of the way so I can look at others who need me right now. I’ll tell you when she begins to move.”
A few grumbles and murmurs followed as the merchant was lifted and placed out of the way. Inside, her anger and frustration grew. During the passing hours, Lei felt her eyes close as she slipped into a realm between sleep and wake. She was jolted awake by two burly arms wrapping themselves around her body an lifting her with ease.
“So you’re a bender pretty lady? I think you’ll be worth quite a bit to the fire nation, don’t you?” A small rumbling chuckle followed while he took long easy strides toward another exit which led toward the ocean. ‘No!! Put me down!’ her mind screamed while her eyes adjusted to the glare of a smoke filled sky. After a time, the crunch of his heavy boots was joined by the sound of waves crashing upon the shoreline.
“I have another one for you. From what I’ve heard from some of the villagers, she’s quite the talented little earth bender.” her abductor said with a slight sneer.
“Nice job. Here’s twenty gold . Keep them coming and you’ll be a very wealthy man, Boulder.” a much higher voice replied.
The obsidian haired girl caught a glimpse of the traitor as he handed her over to their fire nation enemies and was surprised to find the face of the man who’d been earlier guarding the coliseum entrance.
“Don’t worry I’ll bring you some more.” the brawny man snickered as he jingled the gold coin in his hand and moved away.
All the furious earth bender could do was feel herself being carried onto the ship and then below deck where her hands and feet were chained to the hull of the ship. As she lay on the rough boards, she heard the weeping and moaning of her fellow earth benders and friends. ’Ignis the Insane …I will find you…I promise’ her soul pledged. The cheerful young woman who’d befriended a fire bender merely hours ago and believed in simply livingin peace had been injured far deeper than any sword could pierce for she now swore to bring another to his end.
